i may not actually USE everything on this list, but i TAKE everything. it all fits pretty handily into a bin in the back of the pickup (well, except for the rifles themselves, of course). anyone add anything to this? am i taking too much?

i should have included that in the survival gear i have about 75 feet of rope, and in the field-dressing kit i have two 12-and-a-half-foot lengths of rope and a couple of "S" hooks in case the field dressing or dragging gets complicated. haven't had opportunity to use any of that rope yet, but it's waiting, just in case!!

my hunting pack:

• 32 oz gatorade (orange)
• 20 oz diet coke
• 4 gallons water (stays in the truck, and is put into smaller containers so if i need to bring it along, i can)
• lens cleaner (leupold lens pen works well)
• map w/ any appropriate notes scribbled on

i wear my orange vest on the way out, so that isn't included. i wear a baseball style hat (current one says 'got deer?'), but pack the beanie, just in case. since mornings are typically the coldest conditions i'll face in the day, i don't bring any extra clothes (sometimes i'll pack extra socks, though) because chances are good i'll be shedding clothes as the day wears on. i rarely wear gloves anymore. if i do, it is because temps are extremely cold.

i also don't pack a rifle cleaning kit, or a knife sharpening kit (i've found that my blades will hold an edge for 2 deer, and can work if need be on a 3rd). i'm not remote enough to require any survival items or first aid kits (in the navy i learned how to use other stuff for first aid).

everything i need fits nicely in a school backpack w/ plenty of room for me to add shedded clothes (2 layers, anyway).

I'm starting to think i pack wayyyyyyyyy too much stuff.  Especially since our hunts are all day trips.  With the gear that I bring, plus my brothers and dads we barely have enough room in the truck for us !

Think I'll try a minimalist approach this year.  The clothes on my back, my knife, and my rifle and 5 shells. Thats it thats all......well maybe some lunch

Having travelled and hunted in some hell holes.

Handy wipes are essential.  I took an alcohol bath every third day for 2 wqeeks with them.  Clean is great, like a martini in hell.
