Tas,.... I also take 50 ft. of small dia. rope. It works good fer everthin, from constuct'n a ground-blind, to, "hang'n myself" for miss'n an easy shot!!

I'm still 'live'n kick'n, so I ain't had to use tha rope for "self-disciplin" (yet)!

Tha rope could also be used to construct a, "hammock", emergency shelter, fashion a "splint" fer broken bones, field-dress'n a critter on a "slope", tie'n a dead critter fer "drag'n", "hang'n quarters", pull'n yore weapon up into a "tree-stand", and probly "101 other uses".

rondo

i should have included that in the survival gear i have about 75 feet of rope, and in the field-dressing kit i have two 12-and-a-half-foot lengths of rope and a couple of "S" hooks in case the field dressing or dragging gets complicated. haven't had opportunity to use any of that rope yet, but it's waiting, just in case!!

ron: when i go i take 2 or 3 of those little glow sticks. the kind the kids use for trick or treat.  they last for up to 12 hrs.  when there is only 2 of us hunting we use it for last blood. they mark your spot real good. and they can be good for other things. i also take a few 1 gal. zip lock bags with. i also take along a hand full of zip ties. i use them for kill tags and other things. i carry all this stuff in a little back pack like the kids use for school, but camo. i leave it packed all year . and when i use something i replace it right away. now if i could keep the kids out of it i would be all set.

my hunting pack:

  • license
  • rifle(s)
  • appropriate ammo
  • binocs
  • spotter
  • tripod
  • camera
  • knife
  • zip saw
  • 25' of rope
  • 25' of cord
  • stocking cap
  • 32 oz gatorade (orange)
  • 20 oz diet coke
  • 4 gallons water (stays in the truck, and is put into smaller containers so if i need to bring it along, i can)
  • lens cleaner (leupold lens pen works well)
  • map w/ any appropriate notes scribbled on

i wear my orange vest on the way out, so that isn't included. i wear a baseball style hat (current one says 'got deer?'), but pack the beanie, just in case. since mornings are typically the coldest conditions i'll face in the day, i don't bring any extra clothes (sometimes i'll pack extra socks, though) because chances are good i'll be shedding clothes as the day wears on. i rarely wear gloves anymore. if i do, it is because temps are extremely cold.

i also don't pack a rifle cleaning kit, or a knife sharpening kit (i've found that my blades will hold an edge for 2 deer, and can work if need be on a 3rd). i'm not remote enough to require any survival items or first aid kits (in the navy i learned how to use other stuff for first aid).

everything i need fits nicely in a school backpack w/ plenty of room for me to add shedded clothes (2 layers, anyway).

Ran across this article the other day and it contains a few good ideas:

a lot of excellent ideas here, especially the glowsticks and something to drink besides just water. i'll be adding them to my checklist that i use! also, i used to carry a small notebook, kind of a journal, i guess, but i never seemed to use it, especially after i joined these internet forums and could just type out the story, post it, and feel like an idiot about what i did!

Saw his lists...he left out the hernia truss and the two tractor trailers he needs to carry that list.

I'm starting to think i pack wayyyyyyyyy too much stuff.  Especially since our hunts are all day trips.  With the gear that I bring, plus my brothers and dads we barely have enough room in the truck for us !

Think I'll try a minimalist approach this year.  The clothes on my back, my knife, and my rifle and 5 shells. Thats it thats all......well maybe some lunch

and my grunt call

and my binoculars

and some kleenex

rope

blind material

ahhhhh crap..here we go again.I have that disease " whatif itis"

what if i need this

what if i need that

I've got about twenty different Checklists;   Moose fall bear, spring bear, whitetail lite, whitetail heavy, ducks, Africa, antelope, etc.

I try to up-date them upon return, so my list excludes thing I didn't use and adds the items I needed and didn't have.  I tend to include lots of small items (like postage stamps to mail home postcards).  these things make the trips easier.

Great stuff guys but we left out one of the basic must have items. Tarps. I also have an 8 ft plastic kids snow sled that i use for dragging out game. You can fit a whole deer in there or elk and moose quarters. I drill holes every 6 inches all the way around and run rope through it. Once the parts or animal is laying in the sled you can run a seperate piece of rope over the top of your game and through the rope thats going in the holes to strap it down. Some of you may think i'm crazy but the sled glides on gravel, grass, dirt and of course, snow. For any of you that have been by yourselves with a downed animal and had to drag it by the legs or antlers a ways to get it to your trucks will agree how awkward and uncomfortable it can be but the sled will make dragging it a breeze. The sled on it's own only cost me $17.00 (cad) and it's well worth it. It's also great for dragging gear into a spike camp or cabin that's a bit of a walk away for those of us that don't have ATV's. I'll post a pic of mine when i can to show you how easy it looks.

If you can sue McDonalds for getting you fat then why can't you sue the alcohol companies for all the ugly people you ended up sleeping with?

Fella's;

Toilet paper, always take enough for one field emergency.  It's compact & nearly weightless, but oh so useful.

Having travelled and hunted in some hell holes.

Handy wipes are essential.  I took an alcohol bath every third day for 2 wqeeks with them.  Clean is great, like a martini in hell.

If anyone wants my 40+ page hunting fishing lists, PM me.  They are in Word.
