Let's see here :
1 yd. to 150 yds. - .17 HRM (Marlin 17)
50 yds. - 300 yds. - .223 Rem. (Savage 12 FP)
200 yds. - 600 yds. - .243 Win. (Ruger 77 VT)
500 yds. + - 7mm RUM (Winchester 70 Laredo)
Again, can't pick one favorite. They overlap at the extremes of one and the close of another, but each is the best for a particular distance. If I were heading out for a serious day of varminting, all four would go. Later. >> klallen

NH;
My primary varminting is gophers. Actually, they are either Richardson's or Cascade ground squirrels, depending on where you are hunting them. They run about 1/2 the size of a prairie dog. My primary gun for them is a .22 lr, of which I have several. The most accurate is the Volquartsen 10/22, done by Tom in his shop in Carroll Iowa. This is not a drop-in conversion gun, and it has a Weaver V-16 FCH on it. Next is the bone stock 77/22 with a Simmons Whitetail Classic. My newest .22 is a Savage MKII left hand bolt with a Tasco 2.5X10 mil-dot. It's still in the process of finding out just what it's limitations are.
My centerfire varmint is a Ruger #1V in .220Swift. It's wearing a Burris 6X18 A/O target knob scope. The newest member to the family is the Remington 788 LHB in 6mm Remington. I hope to make it my primary coyote gun. Much lighter & easier to pack around than the Ruger #1V. However, work progresses on the Remington.

Well my favourites is the 243 carl gustav sporting a 26 inch tobler barrel.It is deadly accurate and fun to shoot when my son lets me have it back.I also use the rem sendero in 270 with 90grainers at 3600fps it is very spectacular.The 30-378 can also be fun if I run the 125grainers(accuracy is so so but the results are impressive.I have even been guilty of using the 375 H&H when I opportunity arose and it was what I had to hand.Gee on a rabbit was that what people call overkill?Have a good one macca.

A guy just moved to Wisconsin or Minnesota from South Africa and he emails the gun dealer where i got my T/C Scout. The guy was inquiring about a Ruger m77mk2 Magnum Rifle in .416 Rigby. A little bit later the guy called and he had a brit accent. The gun dealer said, "I know who that is," and the African American proceeded to explain that he wanted the rifle soo bad because he missed his Rigby soo much. The guy said that he can do everything with a Rigby because he was a handloader. He said he could load it down enough for squirrels. The gun dealer chuckled and he sold the guy the rifle. The gun dealer told my dad and me the story the day i bought the T/C Scout. My dad did an impression of a .416 Rigby bullet hitting a squirrel. Think of a shell launched out of an artillery piece hitting a squirrel. KABOOOOOOM!!!

Well, my pair are a Romanian M69 .22 for the up close stuff and a Savage 10 in .223 to reach out and touch someone. It's got a Simmons 6-18 and a bipod. I've been looking at Boyd's thumbhole sporter stocks, too. So far with my homemade stuff I've only gone accurately out to 300 yards. Maybe I can master 400 by the end of summer? Even at 300 the wind ticks me off some times. My favorite "varmints" right now are quart bottles at 300.

Those quart bottles really can do some damage to ya. Especially when they are full and they land on your foot. I can understand wanted to make some of them babies explode to pay for the damage then have done. It would do them better justice to hang em, but they dont stay on ropes very well.

BKCorris;
That quart milk jug is a pretty fair substitute, size wise, for a prairie dog. If you haven't tried this before, tie a length of surveyor's plastic tape on a tomato stake & leave about a 1 foot end loose. Put one out every 50 yards between you & your target & the last one at the jug. Spend some time feeling the wind & watching the flags. There can be lot of change between here & there.
You can be juggin' at 400 by the end of summer!

Unfortunately multiple gun deals and deck shuffling has left me to my hunting rifles for the occasional varmint shoot. The .257 wby is close to being done and hopefully a .22 cal of some sort will follow. I'm much more into fishing in the summer and shooting takes a back seat hence the lack of urgency to fill the void.

I have a rem. 700 Heavy barrel sinthetic 22-250 that is very accurate. Hand loads will group less than 1/2 inch at 100 yds. I was out shooting prairie dogs 2 weeks ago and my son shot a dog at over 400 yards with it. I was spotting and after 4 shots the prairie dog was T.U. We did have a witness, Redneck (The gunsmith from Shooters talk) used his laser range finder and read 302 yds to a tree that was at least 200 yards closer. Amazing shot. I guess young eyes work better than old ones.

900F,
Thanks for the tip. I'm trying to keep it fun still, so I might wait to add the extra thinking into it.
NH,
Not only does it smart when those critters jump on your foot, but they've got an attitude problem and like to pee on you if you're too close. They got a scrawny head, but I think I could hang 'em just fine.

Can you show us an enlargement of your avatar? To me, it looks like it might be a cartoon of some guy with a monster tongue hangin out. Did you get this off Gene Simmons site?

For shots out to 175 yards - My Ruger No.1 .22 Hornet. For shots from 200 on to ??? - My Winchester M70 Coyote .223 WSSM. If the varmints need more than that then I unload my Ruger M77V(old model, tang safety) .25-06. any varmint that the .25-06 won't handle then I'll drag out the big stuff(.450 Rigby should do). Lawdog

NH, my fave is my 223. I have a Savage 10FP and it will eat nearly everything I feed it, from gopher loads (like a hot, accurate Hornet) up to 68 grain AMaxes.
Then I've got a 25-06 for East Side (Montana) coyotes...they never seem to get very close, but that's because I'm not very talented. So I need to have some kaboom.
I have a 22BR that is burned out (don't ask), it was a lot of fun before I killed it. And finally, I have an old Marlin and a 10.22 for gophers inside a hundred.
Once I get the BR back in service, I'm hoping to 1.) get another Savage and make it a 221 Fireball, and 2.) rebarrel the first Savage with a Wylde 223 chamber with a short throat. Or maybe I'll rebarrel my Bushmaster AR in the Wylde before I do the Savage.

I figure a tikka in .243, lefty, with maybe a new heavy stock as my main varmint gun within 10 years, and a Ruger m77mk2 lefty in .25-06 with a longer barrel and maybe a new stock should handle all of it just fine. For anything larger, maybe a 7mm STW would do the job. If i ever bought a Remington it would be a lefty in 7mm RUM. I could get a Savage in that, but i just hate both companies so much i just couldnt will myself to do it.

Heck, all I got right now if a N.E.F. single in .223 - extra barrels are about $80 bucks and take 6 weeks fer turn around time. Basically, a cheap alternative to the TC encore rifle. However, these buggers are tack drives if you get the heavy barrel. The triggers SUCK, but you can work them if your careful or know a smith. They claim the rifled slug barrels on them are deadly accurate. Don't know if I'll keep it or not, would hardly get my money out of it, but I don't varmint hunt enough to spend real money on a single caliber gun. In the next year I'll either get a 243 barrel fer it, or go to a savage 12BVSS in 22-250.
