Just wondering how many BSBs use a chronograph to check their handloads.

I've had a Chrony Beta for about 10 years. Just a basic model with a wired remote so I can scroll through results without having to walk up to it from my shooting position.

I like to know what the velocity is and how much deviations there are in a particular handload.  For me it's let me know when I might be getting near max loads, (in addition to hard extraction, flattened primers, etc).  And when I know the velocity I can use one of my books on ballistic tables to calculate trajectories at long range.

I know there are many other ways to do both of the above, but I think the chrono is a very useful tool for the handloader.  It's sure helped me out at times.

So who else uses one?  What kind?  How often?  Etc...

i use a chrony religiously. useful for lots of things... but, trying to develop a good handload w/o one is akin to pissing in the wind.

A chronograph is a real must have for anybody loading more than one bullet/powder combination.

I want to get ahold of a laptop,so I can get one of the rsi pressure trace systems, with the sky screens. It'ld be really interesting to know what kind of pressures different loads turn out.

The most expensive bullet there is isn't worth a plug nickel if it don't go where its supposed to.

My father and I went in on one for Christmas in 1999.  We share it, so it spends some time in K'ville TN and the rest in B'ham AL.  It's an Oehler 35.  I would recommend it to anyone.

I have a chrony, I don't get it out until I have a load I am comfortable with, accuracy wise, then I start checking veocities and spread. Then I use that to determine trajectory, then go abck out to the range and shoot 2-300 yds to check the figures.

Velocitiy itself means very little to me, I am rarley at the top of loads to worry about over pressure.

You can fairly bet that if accuracy is good, extrme spread is small.I have found that the only rounds that usually prefer close to full max loads are the mags.

I have the only chrony in my nieghborhood so all my buddies show up from time to time to use it. It has plenty of battle damage. It now has a coat hanger and duct tape holding up one of the sky screens and just recently noticed a dimple on the back side of it from a downward bullet strike. I've had it about 15 years and don't know how I got along without it. I have found the reloading handbooks to be very close but very conservative by using the chrony. Liability issues I'm sure. It's very rewarding to see my handloads with a smaller average velocity spread than the  factory stuff, makes reloading seem more worth while.

I have a F-1 Chrony that I use while developing my reloads,... I feel it's a must to have one if your going to keep track of how things are progressing.

Thanks for the welcome dakotasin  !

The 7mm Mag is too my favorite round.

I have just acquired a new caliber that had caught my interest (300 SAUM) and am presently working with new loads for it.

It's kind of an odd ball and seems not too popular a round. The closest to it would probably be the 300 WSM.

I had the fortune to WIN a rifle @ a raffle drawing this spring. I chose a Remington 673 Guide Rifle and the caliber I picked was the 300 SAUM.

I came real close to choosing the .350 caliber for it but there weren't too many options as far as reloading in that caliber so the 300 SAUM was my choice instead.

Glad to see you on board 7mm Magnum.

Winning a rifle.  That had to be pretty neat.   Haven't heard of many 300 SAUM's around, so be sure and let us know how it does for you.

Here's a picture of my initial sighting in of the scope and rifle along with a picture of the newest addition to my arsenal.

You can see that it groups very well left to right and then centered. These are shots made from 100 yards,.. in the prone position with bi-pod.

I can't wait to develop my loads for this weapon,.. it's a screamer!

Here's a picture of my 7mm Magnum,.. she started life out as a BDL Deluxe,. As you can see not that look anymore. I made a thumb hole stock out of a English Walnut blank,... over 200 hours into that stock.

I pillar bedded the action and floated the barrel it is fashioned after a "Varmint Pattern" for a stock with a 1 inch barrel groove. It has a much better for-end stock width of 2 1/2 inches for a better grip.

She fits me like a glove and can drive tacks!!

Thanks Moose6 for the warm welcome,... just so you all know I'm a MAGNUM class weapons lover, reloader, and shooter.

I've got one more Magnum class Weapon in my hunting arsnel,...

It's my Smith & Wesson Model 629 Stainless .44 Magnum which I purchased way back in 1980 and quite often use for hunting whitetails.
