Don't have any pictures of mine to post, but, I love the 30-06!! I have two, both 700's. One is a limited edition, custom shop offering for the 200th anniversary of Eliphalet Remington. The other is a SSDM that is so accurate that it is scary.Pictures later. Regards, Eagleye.

Who loves the .30-06? I've been asking myself that for I don't know how many years . Obviously, there's a "small" percentage of ya out there that think it's a pretty "ok" cartridge . I just don't know . Here's my golden oldie. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I got an '06, too. Later. >> klallen

AND AS SOON AS I CAN FIGURE OUT WHY THE HELL MY SPRINGFIELD SHOWS UP FINE WHILE I'M TYPING MY POST THEN TURNS INTO THAT DAMN LITTLE RED "X" WHEN I HIT ENTER, I'LL SHOW YA WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE.

who loves the 06?? dunno. sure isn't me. got no use for it, and can't figure out why anybody else would either, however...
klallen says it best: "yeah, yeah, yeah, i got an 06, too." the 06 is a 'me too' cartridge (much like a 350 powered camaro is a 'me too' car), meaning: "you have an 06? oh, me too...".
the 06 (and the camaro for that matter) are for people lacking creativity and imagination...

A lot of people don't like the 30-06. One of the best reasons i've ever heard for disliking it is - I don't want one of those - if I had one, i'd have no reason to own any OTHER guns.
The 06 is a hunters' gun. More than enough power for any game in north america, with the possible exception of the big browns. With the right loads, its a moose killer out to 400, and those who think they need to shoot much beyond that seriously need to work on their stalking skills.
It's one of the most versitile cartridges on the market today, without breaking the bank OR your shoulder. Most gun types are chambered for it, and the range of handloading options AND off the shelf bullets pretty much guarantee you'll find a lethal bullet your gun can shoot well. Cheap enough to practice with, powerfull enough to do the job and then some.
It's like the old saying goes - "There ain't many problems a man can't fix with 700 dollars and a thirty aught six."

Yup, a big thumbs up for the .30-06 here. Mine's a Winchester new model 70 classic stainless LHB with BOSS/CR in a McMillan stock, Turner full Whelan sling and no scope. No iron sights either. That gun's so good, when ya shoot it the bullet just goes down the barrel & then seeks out the game on it's own.
Actually I lent the scope to a guy, but I thought I'd raise the blood pressure of a few, just to see who's vision went red.
I see the winter Sodakian cold snap has lingered on between somebody's ears. So what flavor off-brand Shetland pony car are you advocating? I suppose you're also a supporter of that red-headed bastard stepchild of the .30-06, the .270.
Ah well, controversy makes the world go round & keeps the 'lectricity flowing in the web.

cb900f-
and no, i don't like the 270 either... the various 7 mags are the 'shetlands' of choice for me, and if a bigger bullet is desired, the 308 win beats the 06 handily, and then there's the 338...

I got an aught six too. Everyone has an aught six. The aught six reminds me of crosstrainer shoes. They are mediocre at everything. For elk, the aught six can be called "too light". And for lopes it can be called "too heavy" For moose, I just dont know. For small game, all the aught six is good for is coloring the trees and the ground red. And yes, I do kind of like the aught six's red-headed step child .270, but then again, what would the .25-06 be considered? or the 8mm-06 or the .338-06 or the .35 Whelan? O yeah, cant forget the .280 Remington and the 6mm-06. The are all step children of the aught six, and you know that family is one of the most effective in the cartridge world?

i don't know about calling the aught-six "too light" for elk. i suspect a lot of elk would disagree with you on that one, but you're right! everyone ought to have an aught-six! hahahahahahaaaa...listen to me talk, i don't even have one. but i use my dad's....does that count?

Dakota - I cringed when I read your post, because I, too, once had a Camaro powered with a 350..........

My 1969 Chevrolet Camaro Sport Coupe circa 1982.
[Thank God, for old pictures - and new scanners!] Sadly, I sold it over 20 years ago for cash for the down payment for my first house. Haven't looked back. Although, I wouldn't turn one down again, if a nice cherry one came around at the right price.
'Course, my wife would make me get rid of some of the .30-06's.
Hey, I also like the .270...........

Tas - yeah that's a 7600. Not the usual gun of choice up here in bolt land - but I wanted something a little different in the way of action and it's a VERY nice gun to carry and point. I chose the synthetic stock - its nice and light.
It's pretty damn accurate too - I don't plan to shoot match with it :) but it's more than accurate enough for my needs. About 1.1 so far -but i think i was having an issue with the scope. It's settling down now - i bet i get an honest 1 or perhaps just a slice under before i'm done and the barrel wears in a bit more.

Isn't the '06 the "if you could only have one gun" gun? Got two of the things. A 1917 U.S. Enfield, Win. mfg. and a 1903 Sprigfield. Both "as issued". And yes both of them have gone hunting! As is!

NH, the .473 casehead family is, mostly, .30-06 based. I'm not down on the family, only that ugly little fart over in the corner.
Dakotasin; Hmmm, must have been a particularly cold winter there this year. The Shetland ponies I was refering to were of the four wheeled variety. Such as the Ford Mousestang, and the Chrysler products Baccaruda & Chugulator. By all means let us not forget the Gremlin & AMX, the comic relief of the genre. I understand that Mercury also attempted an entry, but nobody bought it. The Firebird was there, but it didn't have the engine of the Camaro, just a tick slow.
One of these days I might very well wind up with a .338 Winchester Magnum. The 7's; a perfectly good caliber imported from Europe. Nothing wrong with them, yawn. Remington had to come up with something after the .300 Win Mag. They did a marvelously good job of creating an inefficient version of the .280 didn't they? I've always sorta wondered why, but never cared to get into it.
NH, the reason for the 'mostly': Research the origin of the .30-06 & you'll find the .30-03.

I already knew about the .30-03. I am pretty sure that it had a 200 gr. round nose bullett and was a bit longer than the .30-06. They redisigned the cartridge after the Germans came out with the Spitzer bullet, so our forefathers redesigned the aught three and made it shorter and with a 150 gr. spitzer(i think it was 150) and called it the .30 Government because the .30 US Army had already been taken by the .30-40 Krag.

Everybody needs at least one .30/06. I've got an M1917 in straight military,
a 1940's era sporterized 1917, a Remington 760 pump, and a sporterized 1903 MkI
that Mrs Triggerguard hunts with. The military 1917 was the most expensive, all
all the others were deals I found for $50 to $90 each! How can you pass on that?

I like it. Got a bunch of Springfield 1903s and 1903-A3s about the place and one of the new production M1s. I'm kinda partial to old military rifles and so the '06 is pretty common in my house. The way I see it, you can't have enough 1903s or M1s. You can always find one that is just a little bit more original or in a little bit better condition. I'd like to get one of the new Winchester Model 1895 lever guns in .30-'06 but I could buy two nice bolt actions for what that would cost.

Saw the 30-06 post then the Camero
Well I love the 30-06 and the many other-- larger and smaller calibers... just like I love Shelby Cobras and the big muscle cars but also love the 289 and 302's
