Is there any bullet that works better than the old 250 SWC for do all service? I need to order about a thousand and learn how to shoot that old Ruger all over again. Suggestions?AW

 I don't think theres a better do it all bullet for the 45 than that one.

 My old gun likes them sized .452, with 9 gr unique.

 I'ld also recommend that you watch out and don't get the ones that are cast hard enough they could almost be relubed and used again. I think the commercial casters are making most handgun bullets way to hard.
The most expensive bullet there is isn't worth a plug nickel if it don't go where its supposed to.

Ranch,

A 250 SWC was the common bullet back when the .45 Colt got real popular again in Colorado about 25 years ago, as was your 9.0 grain charge of Unique. I shot several of that combo back through the early 80's in both Blackhawks and 25-5 Smiths.

Any suggestions as to a commercial caster that keeps them soft enough to obturate correctly at walking speeds? I don't really intend to push them over 1000 FPS out of that 4 5/8" barrel under any circumstances. If I had more time, I'd cast them myself out of straight WW of which I have about 150 lbs cleaned and ready to go from almost 8 years ago!AW

BTW,

I'm also curious about that 270 grain SWC bullet mould from RCBS. Does any commercial caster have that bullet ready to load?AW

 Adobe I like the lee 250 swc mold, with wheel weights.I've also had good results with the same bullet and 18.5 grs of 2400.

 You might try Drycreek bullets for something a little softer, and also there's a place in Cheyenne, think they're called Chey-cast that has a pretty good assortment. Leadheads makes a good bullet , but I think about all they have is the hard stuff . Also I've shot alot of Speers 250 gr swaged bullets at some pretty drastic speeds with no leading.

 I was fiddling with my Blackhawk the other day, and realized I'll have owned it 30 years next week. boy how time flies.

I have the two-cavity mould for the Lee 452-255-RF.  This is pretty close to the ideal .45 Colt bullet as I see it.  I cast  this  bullet from wheel weights and lube it with liquid ALOX.  Loaded ahead of 19 grains of H4227, it gets about 1,000 fps from both my Colt New Service (made in 1906) and my Ruger Blackhawk.

I like that bullet as well. Lube it with SPG over a case full of FFFg BP, or liquid alox over 8 to 8.5 grains of Unique.

Maybe I should start my bullet mould search with the LEE moulds. Much cheaper and they do cast easy.AW
