My other post got me thinking. I'm talking deer or other large game rifle. Just the primary rifle if possible. If a variable power, go by what you keep it set at most of the time. Vote for each common hunting rifle you use if you want, but only once per.

Usually use 4 X for my deer hunting with my '06 and 257 Roberts.  However, I use the 257 Roberts for most of deer hunting and I've since put on a 1.5-5X Leupold VX 3.  So that might change.

Varmints and open country hunting I use either a 4-12 or a 6-20X

Really like peep sights. Variables are not usefull in most of my hunting , thou I like the smaller 2-7X alot. Really like fixed 4's except for goat or sheep then hey fixed 6 or a good 3-9X

i usually keep my 3 - 9 variable set at 4X, but i do love the ability to crank the power to 9 when needed.

I have all my variables set somewhere close to the mid-point (+ or -) of their magnification scale.  Seems to work pretty well.  >>  klallen

Poll seems to have missed some of my favorites.  Like 1x,1.5x, 2x and 3x.

I seem to have three different ranges of scopes:1-4x, 2-7x. 3-9x, higher special purpose ones.

The 3-9x is probably the best all round.  The 2-7x is great on guns like my Ruger 1 in 7x57,  It has enough magnification and fits nice; probably can't recommend it unless you want to have a smaller scope than the 3-9x.

The 1-4x is probably the best hunting scope for big game.  WIDE field of view and on 4x you should be able to shoot 250 yds which is a max for most folks.  I have noticed that at the range, I get guys to shoot better off hand if I crank their scopes down to the minimum power.  They don't see the wiggle and don't keep correcting so they settl down.  maybe lots of us should be at the 1.5x for hunting.

I use a 1.5x5 shotgun scope on my .444. Wouldn't trade it for anything higher, except maybe a 2x7.

Bear,

I did have a 1-3, but I messed up and put it in the question space instead of the first poll choice.

BK,

I have an old 1.5-4.5x Bushnell with a "command post", must be at least 35 years old.  Think I paid $49.95 for it, a lot of bucks then.  It has been on everything from a 338 to '06 to 44 mag carbine, to my crossbow.  The optics are starting to blur on 4.5x but on 1.5x it is great.  I love the 'command post' feature as you can move a ring by the eyepiece and the post flips up over the crosshairs.  So you can use the crosshair only for fine shooting, and flip up the post for evening.

Posts were never too popular in the US, but I like them.  If someone made that 'command post' (tm) scope today I'd be buying some.

Tacks,.... In my experience, you'll have tha same "problem" with tha "silver" front-sight.

I'd reccomend the, #FS-G-77-I from TOTW, unless yore gonna do a lot of "low light" shoot'n!

Oh Horrors, they dont have my new scope setting! 2.5x because that is the actual magnification on the Leupold VX-1 2-7x33.
