Every morning I check what's on TV for the evening.
Then I check for any activity on our credit and debit cards. THEN. I start checking wind and conditions in my normal hunting areas, Most of region 4 in MT. I saw up north AKA highway 2. the wind was to be very light and slight chances of rain or snow. Here you CAN'T bet on the weather over an hour out. But I started watching the area last Tuesday. It would change by the day but it would be workable even at the worst forecast. I cross my fingers and made a plan. I was going to take the B-I-L, he only has Sundays off. Saturday after work he called and told me he was feeling crappy and going down hill and decided to cancel. My GD had plans and the wife said" Not on your life" her words. SO it looked like it would just be me. I'm not a fan of going by my self especially in the winter and 150 miles away. I originally had planed to take the wheelers and park the truck in an easy spot. Wheeler trips by your self is a disaster in the making so I left it home and hoped the gumbo roads were frozen or even better dry. Boy did I luck out. They were DUSTY! The roads are just one step above wheeler trails, washed out and very narrow and steep. But I locked the truck in to 4wheel drive and drove slow and causses. The wind was as predicted all day under 2 mph and most of the time west ish. But very terrain orientated, the means it flowed down the Cooley's and valleys. With in mind every time the truck was hidden I stopped and tried calling. I was in BIG river brakes, not to be confused with THE river brakes, 100 miles from them. GREAT looking country. I made 10 good sets about a mile and a half apart. I had coyotes answer back at every set, and on 5 of them I had them show them selves but at over 600 yards each time. All of the ones that showed came in AFTER I stopped calling like 10 minutes later, I would call at least .5 hour them wait another 10 or 15 minutes.. I would call again but nothing I tried would brake them lose. The finally would just walk away, not interested. FUN hunting just slightly frustrating. On the way in I go through a Large Prairie dog town. I planed to shoot it on the way out. BUT I just got to it and truck with a wheeler in the back parked on the edge of the town, Nuts. I talked with them on the way out, it was a guy and his daughter going to shoot the town with the wheeler. Anytime a kid get to shoot with her dad or granddaughter they get the right away in my mind so I left, with out a shot. STILL fun. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

A great day in the outdoors. I'm sure it would have been nice to get something but it definitely was not a wasted day.

Most o your weather comes through here a day or so later. It started snowing here about an hour ago.
I guess I shouldn't complain, I have only shoveled once so far this winter. I just hope we get enough to get some moisture into the ground.
