North Logan got me thinking I want to buy A USGI 1911. I have been looking at gunbroker.com and auctionarms.com. Where would you sugest I look and how much would you expect to pay for one in fairly good condition. It seems like I have been seeing alot of junk for around $1100.00. Is this the going price?

Thanks

Wing;

A lot of variables to consider with an actual USGI .45.  Most have had at least one, if not more, armorer's rebuilds.  Many were surplused out to allied nations & have been returned to market as those nations convert over to other handguns.

A matching numbers gun in good to very good shape is a very rare beast & worth over a grand on today's market.  BUT, there are a lot of forgeries out there too.  Personally, I'd never buy a purported whoopee-ding gun over the net.  I'd want to do a deal that included authentication rights & buy-back from a dealer I could face-to-face with.

I'd also locate at least one, or more, recognized experts in the .45ACP field & ask their prices to authenticate, & what their schedule is for doing the work.

On the other hand, a typical USGI rebuilt & used hard gun should be in the mid to high hundreds in good condition.

I'd never buy one simply because I don't think the money premium is worth it for the history.  I buy other 1911 guns that function better with a variety of ammo.

Wingmaster - A lof of what CB has said about USGI 1911's has merit. I think we can thank the movies "Saving Private Ryan" and "Band of Brothers" for reigniting the nostalgia for collecting WWII armament, particularly USGI 1911 pistols. And hence the steep rise in prices.

Fortunately, where I'm at I've been able to pick up the odd one at very reasonable prices. Mostly because they have been 'mix-masters' [i.e. the slides & frames don't match]. And some have needed refinishing because of poor storage/holster wear. No matter to me as all my stuff is "shooter" class anyway. And if a USGI pistol has been arsenal reworked/refinished in it's history it probably legitimately is a 'mix-master' anyway as the armorers didn't care if the parts were from different makers as long as they fit & functioned.

If you do some research [there's a couple of excellent resource sites on the internet] and know what you are looking for you may be able to pick up a "shooter" class USGI fairly reasonable. I would think one might do better at gunshows and checking local gun dealers rather than auction sites on the internet. At least that way you can have "hands on" without just buying from photos. And even if you do purchase a 'mix-master' at least living in the USA you will be able to readily assemble the "correct" parts to your USGI.

I was at a gunshow in Las Vegas in March. What I would've given to be able to purchase some USGI parts, particularly 'in-the-grease' authentic/correct slides, to go with what I have been able to acquire north of the border here.

Regards, Marcus.
