The WI turkey season has been open for a few wks now.  We get to apply for a time period via a drawing.  The hunting period consists of 5 days beginning on Wed-Sunday for each of the several periods (begining in early April)......thus giving the turkeys time off from pursuit on Mon-Tuesday each week.......this gives the turkeys time to "recoup" between hunting periods so say the DNR.

Anyway I drew a late season again this year beginning May 5-9.....I opted to buy a leftover tag for the next season May 12-16 so I can get in more time this year.  Late seasons sometimes are not so great...nearly all the foilage is out and makes seeing them a bit harder and they have been chased and "called" and even the love life may be on the wane.....so gotta get the turkey gear out and ready for next week.

Good luck.

It looks like my turkey hunting has been a wash out. The snow is 4 feet deep out where the turkeys live. All the roads are closed and will be a muddy hell for weeks to come.

NY has a 4 week season and so does PA.  I'll be hunting both, only till 12 noon daily (no Sunday hunting in PA).  I have 2 tom tags for each state.

Spent today scouting, looks poor due to heavy snow and cold winter (Feb-Mar.).

Will miss tomorrow as I have a charity trout fly fishing event, I must attend.  Brown trout,  over 22" count.

It is a tough life, but we retirees must keep up our end.

Good luck guys, gobble Gobble  GOBBLE.

IBD, I drew May 5-9 also. Normally I hunt this week but got rained out the last 2 years so I switched weeks. Will it work? Time will tell the whole story but it's raining cats and dogs here tonight. Supposed to rain much of the weekend. Looks like I picked the right days NOT to hunt. Now we'll see what next week brings. I think I'm going to try thr old Stevens SxS if the weather is good. I'll need a closer shot though. 2 3/4" #5 Handloads 1 1/4 heavy load of blue dot. RD

RD....it rained here today mostly, some this evening and some last nite.....hopefully next week will be dry.  I only get to hunt w-th then go north to Jason & his wifes Church wedding on the 8th.  They only had a judge last year in El Paso before he mobilized to Iraq with his brigade. So this is a formality so the family can get in on it.  My luck to get the wrong turkey week....but then I that's why I got the extra tag for the following week.  My "old" gun for turkey is my M97 Win w/#6 factory loads.  A full choke 30" bbl.  My regular is a Mossberg M500 w/3" Rem #5's.  It has the old camo pattern that is reminisient of the old WWII Marine camo.  Good Luck!

IBD, Give my congratulations to Jason. The old Win97 is a fun gun to shoot but it's been said that in it's day it sunk more duck hunting boats than all other causes combined. Evidently cold, wet thumbs and shotgun hammers are a dangerous combination. I could also use my 16 ga model 12 if the weather is nice. I've taken both guns to the cabin with me but, like you, ended up using my old Mossberg 500 in 3". I think I've taken more birds with it than anything else. RD

Well RD....I don't think I will use a boat for my turkey hunting this year so no danger of sinking the boat with the 'ol M97....I do use it for pheasants also but not DUCKs anymore cuz I don't want to put steel shot down the bbl.  Anyway the ol' M500 w/"plastic" stock/forearm is more better for the wet envrionment.  It has a 24" ported ribbed bbl that's good for turkey hunting with the x-full choke BUT I have a 28" bbl. w/IC choke (steel) to use for the ducks....I think you get a better "swing"/follow thru for passing ducks with a longer bbl.  Water.....That's why I have retired my M870 from duck hunting....it has nice walnut circa 1972 on a field gun and water raises hell with wood.

Sunny here today but really windy yesterday and today.  Don't need the wind for Turkey time come Wed AM.

ps...where at is your cabin????

It's about 12 miles east of the Mighty Mississippi on a ridge over in Kickapoo Country.

IBD, Actually that's an alfalfa field. The discbine takes a 12 foot swath at about 5 1/2 MPH. The cabin is about 4 miles east of Seneca. Land belongs to my buddy. The cabin is kind of a community thing. He's got the bulk of the $ in it. But we all contributed labor, materials etc. for the initial build. Sleeps 6 comfortably for about 4 days at a time. Then things start to get a little tight.  We've had 8 for a couple of nights a time or two. Morels should be just about perfect by Thursday or so. There have been years when the pounds of morels outweighed the pounds of turkey and we didn't get skunked on the Turkey either. RD

Just got back from getting drenched in the rain.  Hear some birds, but by 8:30 my chair had a puddle in it.  Now the front of my house has two blinds, 8 turkey decoys, two fabric folding chair, two back packs, and call bags  all trying to dry out for Wed.

well bear you get an "E" for effort........around here the gobblers generally quit gobblin' about 0930 or so for the day.  I too will be out on Wednesday waiting for the elusive bearded gobbler to come to my plaintive, seductive like a hen in need calls........

Got my stuff dry, by throwing it all out of the truck into the front yard it had gotten sunny.  Went out to repack truck, and standing in my pile of upside down, folded plastic decoys is a 10 inch tom gobbling he head off. Confused     go figure.

My nephew was hunting about 8 miles from me and got a 10 inch bird at 10:30 after it had gotten bright.

Wednesday is another dayThumbs Up

tried a new one tonite, new for me anyway......set up a trail camera to see if the birds are in the area I selected to hunt in Wed.  They have been there the past 3 yrs but not much sightings reported this spring in this area.....so here's hoping they will be on camera when I check tomorrow....found out tonite the neighboring 40 to my area is being hunted by the owner and 3 others....normally I get to hunt there too but this yr we both drew the same time period....rats!

Well, day 1 for turkeys (5-5-10) was a bust for me....not one gobble to be heard in my best area......moved for day 2 and no sign or sound of any gobblers there either.......dun after day 2 and headed up north to the wedding for my son.  That went great.

Now back and Wed 12th I get to try for turkeys again for the next 5 days.  Raining now and all last nite so hope it lets up for the rest of week.  Gobblers around this area have quit talking....they have been pestered for the past 4 wks so maybe getting hunter shy.....or all hens have been serviced or ?????

Who has some success to report on fetching up 'ol tom????
