i had a hard time swallowing this one, but here it is~~

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ruger M77 Target, 25/06. (At 9 1/4# this has got to be catering to the 'sendero' hunter)

Marlin 1895MR, 450 Marlin. (whitetails have big fangs and claws now?)

Sako 75 Finnlight, 300 Win. Mag with Trophy Bonded Bear Claw bullets???? (Jeff H. Johnston, Assistant Editor made this suggestion. ????)

Savage 110FP, 25-06. (fine caliber, but isn't the 110fp more of a tactical rifle?)

Remington M700 Sendero, 7mm Rem. SAUM. (mulie gun? ok, but whitetails?? c'mon!)

Weatherby Vanguard, .308 Win (here ya go, fred!)

Howa M-1500 JRS Classic, 300 WSM. (see commensts re: the sendero)

Kimber 8400, (they did not mention which caliber the testing was done in.)

Blaser K95, .270 Win. (This is a single shot Rifle.)

Mossberg SSi-ONE, .30-06. (good chambering, don't know anything about the rifle)

-------------------------------------------------------------------

anyway, probably a few good rifles here, but i think they could have done a little better in choosing. comments?

what would YOU have like to seen on that list? keep in mind, we are talking WHITETAILS, not bears, elk antelope or prairie dogs.....or even pigeons!

as for myself, i was very surprised not to see a 6.5x55 or at least a .260 remington there. for inherent accuracy, shootability and all-around performance, the 6.5x54-MS would have been hard to beat, as well.

Hey Tasunk, i read that article today. I think the guy was absolutey insane! Now seriously, who would actually use the Ruger Target rifle on deer? I think the guy was on drugs or something. I cant see the sendero as even a mulie gun. I believe that any rifle that weighs more than 8 lbs. and wears a heavy contour barrel counts as a varmint/target rifle and no other designation can be put on it.

i'd never hunt deer in these parts w/ a heavy barrelled rifle, even if it is fluted.

for deer, the best choices would be a bolt gun by any major mfgr (rem, ruger, savage, win, tikka, sako, colt, s&w, howa, weatherby) chambered to anything between 257 roberts and 338 win mag.

2nd choice would be a lever action in similiar chamberings.

3rd choice would be a slide action in similiar chamberings.

4th choice.... anyway, i really don't agree w/ their top choices. evidently made by someone who doesn't really get out to hunt that much (can you imagine carrying a ruger target in, through, up, and down the black hills??).

ahh, well, shoot what makes ya happy, i guess, and if happiness comes in the form of a 10 or 11 pound beast, better you than me...

Hunting is not a matter of life or death; it is much more important than that.

My list taht i am going to make is not in any order, but it is from what rifles I think are best suited for persuing whitetails.

1.Marlin 336 .30-30 or .35 Remington

2.Ruger m77mk2 (within a few years mk3 cough)

3.Tikka Whitetail Hunter in 6.5x55 Sweed.

4.Remington 7 in .308 based cartridges.

5.Remington 700 in aught six and .270

6. Winchester model 70 in .30-06, i cant see a model 70 in any other caliber for deer. The aught six matches with my idea of the m70, rugged dependablility.

7.(my no. 1 choice) Savage 99 in .250-3000, .300 Savage and .303 Savage, o wait cant forget .308

8.Browning a-bolt in .270 or .30-06

9.Weatherby SBGM in .257 Weatherby (this is for all yall magnum fans out there)

10.Ruger #3 in .45-70

This is my list that i have thunk up all by myself, so please dont attack me too much on it.

Only thing that I can think of with the heavy benchrest style rifles being included in this list is for those hunters that don't wander the heavy brush for their Whitetail but wait in ambush.  Grain fields, range lands, clear cuts; stuff like that.  If it doesn't take a lot of walking to get into the position desired, I'd imagine that weight of rifle probably wouldn't be to much of a concern to these hunters.

Don't know for sure if this reasoning would make them (the Ruger VT or Remington Sendero) one of the top 10 Whitetail getters, but it might.?.?.?.?  Later.  >>  klallen

Fella's;

I've got to admit that I'm surprised that the Winchester model 94 in .30-30 didn't make anybody's list.  If there was ever one gun that I've always associated with whitetail brush hunting, that's it.

For what it's worth, I don't have one & never have had one.  It's one of those things that I've always sorta thought that I should have, but.

The Senderos are popular in south Texas brush country. Almost all hunting is from elevated stands, so weight is not a factor. Different needs for different hunting styles. Remember this is a list of the most popular hunting rifles, I think, not the best hunting rifle.

The best hunting rifle is the one that you have and can shoot effectively.

Hey CB, get a Pre angle eject model 94. That is what i have. The rifle handles beautifully, and it shoots decent. Never have put it on a bench, because with woods guns, all you need to do is be able to hit an 8 inch pie plate at 75 yards and its sighted in. The 94's are some of the cheapest guns out there. Just look around. At every gun store it is unAmerican for them to Not have a Winchester 94.

Since all my deer hunting has been in woods, I haven't found anything better than a '94 in .30-30.

Hey .45 Colt, try an older Marlin 336A, with the 2/3 length magazine. They handle better than the winchester 94. It is 7.5 lbs, and it handles like it is 6. It is a real steady holder, and i can shoot well with it.

I get the NRA/AH. I'll have to look at that. Must be a non-hunter politician that wrote it. Being a Mich resident my, new then, 1958 Marlin in 35 Rem was a top whitetail rifle here. I made a BIG mistake when I sold it in Hawaii to a navy friend in 1962. .45 COLT, it had a 2/3 magazine also. I saw one like it at Williams Gunsight a few years ago, but it was all beat to hell. It sure brought back memories tho.

Tas,

I got the mag this afternoon and just read the article. In all fairness to the author, Michael Hanback, he is NOT just a non-hunter politician - I feel I owe him an apology. It took a while to read the full article, but I think he did a good job. He likes his 243 Win for W. T.'s; thinks the 7-08 Rem is better(I agree); I prefer a 2-7 power scope(he includes it); his conclusion is his current taste is a lite wt, composite stocked, short bbl'd bolt action in 270 or 30-06(very good, but for me I'd replace them w/7-08 Rem or 308 Win). I'll read this artilce a couple times again.

I see Jim Shockey has another article. I like reading his stuff - also others in this mag. I think Jim wrote mostly for NAHC before.
