Topic: the coyote rifle? Posted: 15 May 2004 at 10:20 |
assuming that you are NOT worried about the pelt, what would be your choice for the top coyote rifle?
the .22/250 with a heavey-for-caliber ballistic-tipped bullet would certainly be one of my first choices; not necessarily the best one, but a good one.

I keep coming back to my .270. Using 130gr ballistic silvertips sure gets the job done.......although I wouldn't use them if i was going to save the pelt. Big mess.

Can't argue with that! That's why God put the 220 Swift on this earth, to end all controversy.

Coyotes go about the same weight as our wild dogs or a bit lighter then our northern ones.If your not skinning a 243 is a stopper.I used a 220 swift for a long time but after my 243 I don't think I'll go back.That in no way downgrades the 220 it is still one hell of a good cartridge.
At longer range a 6-284 is very likeable.

Fella's;
I've got a .220 Swift on a Ruger #1V. And it indeed is a 'stopper'. But, these days my coyote gun is a 6mm Remington. It's a lighter gun, just as accurate, and man is it able to drop ole Wiley! I use the 75 grain Hornady V-Max over 46 grains of IMR 4350. It produces about 3050 fps muzzle out of an 18.5" barrel.

Kind of a toss-up between two :
My Ruger M77 Mark II VT .243 Win or the Savage 116 BVSS .25-06 Rem.
80 gr. Ballistic Tip from the .243 a bit over 3700 fps. The .25-06 load development is still under way, but I'm hopeful the 115 gr. Ballistic Tip will show pleasing results. >> klallen

350gr. at 2300fps, you're killing 2 birds with one stone! Shooting those yotes and skinning them at the same time.

When I was young and stupid about three years ago I bought a Ruger VT77 in 22-250. I put a 2 1/2lb 15x scope on it and a Harris bi-pod making it about 14+ and proceeded to walk sections without snow shoes with that 14+ pound boehmuth. I dumped that thing for a loss and now carry an AR-15 with a light weight 16" barrel and colaspable stock with a bright red dot sight that shows up against the snow. From one extreme to another? I may have given up 200 yds but when was the last time you saw a yote that wasn't movin? the extra followup shots sure help. .223 52gr Serria BTHP "peltsavers"

I am doin' a dog rifle now,,I am leanin' to the 220,,but since a rifle that is great to carry all day for dogs,,is great for carryin' all day for deer too,,so I am thinkin' on the 6mm Rem.,,with the 243 or 250 or 257 tied for 3rd,,but for a DEDICATED dog drill,,220 swift fast twist,,lite-med. weight,,not feather wgt.,sporter and a super clear ( read Burris ) 6x fixed power glass,,and a top quality 4x would work just as well.Now this is a roamin' around rifle,,not a stand rifle.I was won to this type of set up after I knew of a guy who was useing a 181/2" mdl. 7 in.17 Rem. and taking dogs out to 350 on a regular basis,,the lower vel in the 181/2" allowed the .17 cal. slug to work at long range.It was his fox gun and when the fox's ran out and the coyotes took over he just used what he had
