Now you've done it! You got me looking at 1911's now! I read an article last night about a Firestorm. They are inexpensive. They seem like a good starter 1911, but i read about quite a few problems they had. What are other inexpensive 1911's to look at? I would like to stay <400.

springfield has a new ww2 semi-repop... cabela's is selling them for $389.95. my brother snatched one up... good gun for the money. it is a basic, no frills gun. and there is its beauty: it is a gun - nothing more, nothing less.

There's lots of 1911 clones out there, NH.  Some are spitting images.  Easy to work with, upgrade with goodies and gadgets and fine tune.  Others poor attempts at immitation that ya probably shouldn't touch with a 10 ft. cattle prod.  Do some research.  Ya should have no troubles finding something to satisfy your 1911 interest under that $400 price limit you've set.  Later.  >>  klallen

NH;

The overwhelming scuttlebutt opinions currently are:  Stay away from the Daly 1911's.  Jury's still out on the low-buck Springfield, but the company as a whole has a pretty good reputation.

Do check the opinions on some of the other sites though.

What is wrong with the Charles Daly? They seem like a good looking inexpensive 1911. The Springfield Armory GI .45 seems to be a pretty good, no frills 1911 from the looks of it. I want to see what NL has to say about this stuff, as he seems to be the 1911 king of the bsb.

my favorite 1911... this is a colt, and i paid $400 for it nib... that was about 6-7 years ago, though, and i don't think you'll find one new for that price...

here's another shot of the same gun:

and once you have a 1911, you're done for... that is either all you'll think about, or all you'll buy.

moose- yep, that's winnie the pooh. piglet is on that blanket, too. yeah, i'll find another backdrop, but i am at school right now - probably not a good idea to bring a gun here for photographic purposes, so you'll have to wait until i get home...

nh- next time you are at 1911 forums, scroll down to the 'springfield' section, then look for dsk's write up (sticky post) on springfield's <$400 springfield. gives you a good idea about the gun, written by a guy who knows 1911's... there are a few cons to it, but for the non-competition shooter, it is a favorable weapon.

if i were in the market for a very inexpensive 1911, that springfield would be the route i'd go. for under $500, they have a similiar gun (i think they call it mil-spec) that is a little more refined but essentially the same thing...

i will also second cb's thoughts on the daly... just stay away from 'em.

1911's are highly addictive, parts are readily available, and the gun can be made to look and feel anyway you want it to. amazingly enough, the seemingly plain grips can be dressed up or down to match your wildest imagination... the grips on mine are rosewood, which replaced the factory rubber. hogue has some very nice looking grips available, grooves, no grooves, checkered or not, wood, rubber, etc... then there are dozens of other grip manufacturers... then start looking at sights, beavertails, hammers, triggers... add to that that much of the work can be done by you, and there's just no end; and that is part of the reason you can't stop at one... what-if's start, then next thing you know, you have several 1911's, some are works-in-process, some are done, etc...

Hunting is not a matter of life or death; it is much more important than that.

Hey NH - Great thing about a 1911 is that you can also get .22 Conversion Units for them. This makes for a great economical plinker as well...

Colt WWII USGI .45 frame [refinished] with Colt .22 Conversion Unit.

Hey NH,

I posted about the 1911 about a month ago.  These guys have me convinced (and rightly so) to spend the extra money for a Kimber.  I have to agree with you guys on that too.  They are going for just under $700 here.  You know, you get what you pay for.
