made it down to the toy store today, and spotted an h&k usp 40 (used) on the shelf. i don't know anything about h&k, but did note this one did not have a threaded barrel, and i don't think it was a compact. i know h&k has a stellar reputation, but this one was priced at $630, and came w/ 4 10-round mags. for that money, i'd probably just buy sig, or even save a buck and get a glock (i have both sigs and glocks already), unless i am missing out by not having an h&k in the inventory? appreciate any thoughts, fellas... |

H&K makes great handguns, but I think they are over engineered. I have shot a number of them but don't own one. They are light and accurate, but I just can't get past the trigger to buy one. To me, there is too much going on in the trigger on double action. They are good guns though abd you shouldn't take my word for it if you want to buy one. Your SIG mention though, spoke great wisdom. I have a 226 and a 220. I believe that the SIG is what all auto pistol makers aspire to be. Ruh Roh, I just may have riled some......................Kingpin

Dak; I've got an H&K USPc in .40 as my daily carry gun. The main reason I picked the H&K is that the company has built a very left-friendly gun. That purchase was over ten years ago now & the company has only continued to make even left friendlier guns. However, there are other reasons to seriously consider an H&K too. For instance, I have an older H&K catalog from about the time I bought the gun, I'll send it to you if you'd like. On page three, lower right corner, is a little box detailing an experiment H&K made. They deliberately lodged a bullet in the barrel of the test gun. Then they fired a cartridge into the obstructed barrel. Which didn't blow up, but that wasn't the object to begin with. They then cleared the barrel & fired a test group for accuracy out of the same gun. Which measured under 2.5" at 25 meters. That's a pretty stiff test not only of accuracy, but of structural integrity too. I've been using this gun for around 12 years now. No problems, zero, none. 900F |

The H&K p2000....pretty much the same gun as the USP, and USP Compact was one of two guns the passed the DHS test...8500 rds....BTW, the other is a Sig. The compact is a fine gun.

A Friend of mine was the Director of public Safety in Louisville, Kentucky, he picked H&K as the Departments replacement for their SIGs because Cops don't take good enough care of their pistols to carry the Sig's and the H&K is a TRUE COMBAT Firearm. That means, the H&K will shoot "DIRTY."

In my job, I have been working with SIGs daily. I have seen over 500 226's go to 45,000 before being turned in for new guns. They could have gone for more, but we have to turn them in by regulation. Additionally, I took my personal SIG to a shooting school where we fired more than 3000 rounds per gun in the school. I purposely(sp) did NOT clean my pistol the whole week. trying to get a failure from dirt. It didn't happen. I did get an ass reaming from my friend who wanted to borrow my pistol when I got back. I told him "Sure, but I think it needs cleaned." To make a long story short, he took it and cleaned it, but was VERY unhappy with the condition he recieved it in. Anyway, I have seen SIGs with ALL types of abuse, and they still keep shooting. Just for what it's worth. As I said before, HK makes a fine pistol, it's just personal with me. In view of what I have seen, the SIG is the best of the lot as far as I am concerned...........................Kingpin

I've run nearly 8,000 rounds through my H-K USP .40, with 0 stoppages EVER, and it's tolerances haven't measureably changed since I first aquired it. The only negative factors I've dealt with carrying the USP is it's larger size, but I'm a larger guy and LIKE the more impressive size. With the four 10 round mags I am guessing that it is a pre ban gun and would wonder who had it prior. HK makes a great gun but I would prefer to purchase new (comes with 13 round mags) in that I then know exactly how the gun was taken care of, round count etc. BigAl Edited by BigAl4604 |

Big Al; Look at the side of the slide that has the S/N. Towards the muzzle, you'll see the antler cartouche, and in front of that there should be a code group. Most cases, the code group is a two letter designator. Give me the code group & I'll tell you when your gun was made. 900F |

Thanks 900, I completely forgot about the letter designators. Mine has the designator KF and was made in 1995. How can I tell what year my USP was made? BigAl |
