Evening fellas >> After wrestling a little with FedEx yesterday afternoon, I have my revolver. I was going to go out today and shoot some CorBon stuff I picked up but came down with a nasty case of something (flu, cold ?). Needless to say, I'm not going from from the house for a while. The cylinder measured out at 2.290". .010" shorter then the X-Frame cylinder so using the 700 gr. WFN's is a no-go (listed as 2.310" OAL by the bullet manufacturer). This is the 10" model. With the ports, there's 8 3/4" usable barrel. 72 ozs. as it sits without scope stuff or a cylinder of cartridges.
Comparisons with my Taurus .44 RemMag. Taurus base, signature z's and a Burris 1.5-4x22mm handgun scope are on order.
This is the CorBon factory round with the .454 Casull on the left, the .50 AE on the right. It's listed as 1625 fps with the 440 gr. Cast Performance LBT so it should be lively, to say the least.
Reloading components are trickling in. The 500 gr. LeadHead WFN's should show up around the same time as the scope. Hopefully I'll be over this crud by then. Anyway, that's it. >> klallen |

I favor the Smiths over Taurus in general, but this 500 just looks a little better balanced than the X frame Smith & overall the proportions look better. The proof's in the shooting, but it looks very nice. About how much did you grab from the piggyback to bring it home? I've got a 2.5X8 Weaver on my T/Cs - The Optic Zone has them for about $185.00 - and I think they're a good set up. |

500gr Leadhead's! Dude you are equiped for everything short of "Nesse". When I bought my 465 Leadheads they had somebody over in Africa using them on an elephant and black rhino hunt with a S&W .500. You are getting up into the Blue Whale/Pterodactyl category with the 500 grainers. My suggestion is to wear a glove with the hot loads. I broke a bone in my palm that took me months of recovery and .22 pistol shooting to get rid of the flinch that came with it. Crimp the snot out of your reloads....If you are unsure of your crimp only load 2 at a time.d Shoot one. If the OAL of the unfired round is the sme OAL as when you loaded it you have enough crimp. Delivered for $675, DFLETCHER. I don't have a lot of experience with the X-Frame but I do like the way this Taurus balances in the hand. There was concern with the 10" barrel but it feels nice. I'm hoping I can get the scope mounted more over the hand then farther out on the barrel. Should help with balancing even more. Yeah, DEADDOG, 500's it is. Reason? I originally had the 300 gr. XTP's rolling in my .454 Casull at 1600+ fps. An accurate enough load but lively. At the time, my bro was working with some of the quality heavy cast bullets available. After looking into them as a big game bullet and seeing advantages they offer over jacketeed stuff, I figured I'd give them a try. My load ended up being the 395 gr. LBT at just over 1400 fps. What I didn't expect wat that the comfort of shooting increased with this load over the light weight, faster load, as well. So this is the mind-set I've adopted with all my revolver rounds ... heavy cast bullets at moderate velocities. Ya get all the performance expectation with the comfort of lower velocities. That's why I choose the 500's. I'm not looking to push them to MAX S&WMagnum velocities cause they won't require it for wonderful performance. If the 440's in the CorBon stuff are listing 1625 fps, I'd be happy with the 500's going 1250 fps and I'm willing to bet they're going to be more comfortable to shoot. Now, I understand comfort is going to be a relative thing when you're talking these big handguns. There's still going to be recoil and you don't get into them thinking there will be none, but if it worked in the Casull, I'm curious to see if it'll work in the .500. Anyway, that's the game-plan, for now. Take care. >> klallen |

Evening Gentlemen >> Got to tie up a couple loose ends today with the .500 S&W Magnum. Ran the last two rounds of the CorBon factory ammo over the chrony. This stuff's loaded with a 440 gr. Cast Performance LBT with an advertised velocity of 1625 fps & 2580 # of muzzle energy. From the Taurus, velocities averaged 1671 fps & 2732 # of muzzle energy. I was mildly shocked. I had originally planned on downloading the 500 gr. WFN's for comfort reasons, but after seeing these numbers and feeling the recoil associated with them, I'm going to shoot a bit higher with my velocity goal. Rather then 1200ish fps, I'm thinking something along the lines of 1350 - 1400 fps will be manageable.

Hey, Mike. Honestly, I don't know what I'll be hunting with this thing. Load development's the first order of business so I guess a lot of paper-punching at first. After that, hogs, maybe. I have been out several times where we hunt out Mulies with a revolver in hand but never had anything come in close enough for handgun ranges. At least, "my" handgun ranges. Recoil's stout. Manageable, but stout. It's a heavy revolver so that certainly helps things. Feeling the recoil of these CorBon loads, I was very happy to see that the 440's were going as fast as what they were. Gave me the encouragement needed to push the 500's harder then what I'd originally planned. Take care. >> korey
