Got a price on the Ruger GP 100 4" or 6" from a local dealer Includes Tax, state background check ($10)etc. $530 out the door. Also found out about a .357 Rossi med frame 4" used $315. I really like the Ruger but the Rossi price isn't too bad for a plinker. Made by Taurus. Anybody got any experience with these? Junk or servicable. RD

Rocky;

Is the gun you're being quoted stainless or blued?  Checking on GunsAmerica, that's about $90.00 high for a blued model, about $40.00 high for stainless.  But, when you figure in the FFL & shipping fees, your guy is probably pretty competitive if the guns are stainless.

locally blue gp's go for $449 and stainless go for $499 - i know this because the local shop has 1 of each sitting out, and i'm going to buy the blued one this weekend if the gun show on saturday fails to produce a smith 586...

gun shop in the big city runs $480 negotiable on the blue, and $520 negotiable on the stainless...

as for rossi... no experience here. sorry!

 Don't bother with the Rossi, if you're going the less expensive way Some of the Taurus (66 ?) has a good rep with the local slobber shops here.

But all in and all done if you don't get the Ruger now, you'll probably be trying to trade into it after awhile.

The most expensive bullet there is isn't worth a plug nickel if it don't go where its supposed to.

I have shot the Rugers and they are great guns. I carry a Taurus 650SS, and love it to, but it is a carry gun. No rear sight nad hammerless. They do make some modles with adjustible sights however. I have nothing but good results with my Taurus. Worth a look. Mine was $350 NIB at Big Bear Sport about three years ago.

Bought Dad a Taurus 357 magnum for concealed carry.  It had the shrouded hammer, I'm thinking it's called a model 651 CIA???  Excellant gun that didn't break the bank.

OK, I cheaped out. Went to one of the local emporiums to see what they had. What I at first took to be a S&W turned out to be a Blue Llama 6" .357 Commanche III. Admittedly, it's no Ruger. It is a DA with a vent rib and adjustable sights. Very tight over all. Virtually no cylinder gap, a little slop in the crane in the open position but tight when locked up. Very slight side play (roll) in the cylinder when locked, less than a new Rossi in the case. No holster wear but a few scratches in the bluing here and there. Trigger a little heavy in DA but short pull with no drag in SA. Dealer threw a box of 50 Rem. .357 125gr JSPs ammo, a box of 100 138 gr SW cast lubed bullets, a box of 155 gr cast SW unlubed, 100 once fired .38 special cases and a gun rug. With Tax, WI background check the whole deal was $303. I've never been a fan of .357s and this is sort of a compromise anyway as I want my wife to try shooting more and figured low power 38s might be the way to go. She really seems to enjoy .22 Rifle shooting and is a surprisingly good shot for a novice. If she takes to this I'll trade this off for a good gun for her and eventually buy a redhawk in .45 colt for me. The way I figure it most any working revolver is worth $200 sale or trade. When I pick it up I'll post pics. In the meantime I'll put together some loads. Any thoughts on this gun pro or con are appreciated. I've got a tough hide and I've probably blown $300 in less considered experiments. RD

The Ruger GP100 is a great .357 wheelgun.

Personally, I'd take a used S&W K or L frame over a spanking new Rossi or Taurus anyday.

Picked up this used/exc S&W 586 last year. Couldn't be happier.

If it's a .357 and not a S&W, I would pass, and I have owned them all at one time or other.................................Kingpin
