We have an annual resting point for several 100,000 snow geese only 55 miles from town. The spring Flight is much more concentrated then the fall and can be as short as 3 or 4 days and all the birds go through. This year's fall flight never happened, the lake was frozen and the birds kept going.
If you can imagine the name of the lake is "Freezout lake" Management area. No that is not miss spelled.
I have seen it many times and at sunup the noise is deafening.
The closest town F airfield is 5 or 6 miles away and they here the geese all daylong like near an airport.
I have tried to get the wife in on it but never seam to get the timing right. People come from all over the country to see and film the action. There here now.

Google earth is not real time.
But yes it is. Way back before they irrigated "the bench" it was a natural alkali lake, on out let. The ground water from the flood irrigation collects there and has huge amounts of salts.
The original part of the lake , the lower large part , is 20 feet deep in the winter. A lot of it is a foot deep to just wet grass and "GUMBO" The gigantic carp get in to it from the irrigation ditches out of the sun river. The can tolerate the phosphates and salts. It is a destination for bow fisherman. But you need an mud boat or air boat to navigate it. Yes you can use a canoe or kayak, but remember our winds, I have been in F airfield when the wind was gusting over 90 mph.Shocked

Yes you can if you can find a parking space.
I hear reports that 60% of all the ducks harvested in MONTANA come off Freezout.
I shot my first swan there.
A mud boat is defiantly an advantage.

I think we hunted the area around it for dogs.
Do you remember the very muddy road we called on, I was using my boys Chevy truck. That would be the day.

PS
I see Google has it spelled wrong.

That's not very politically correct! Gay woman or lesbian. She felt threatened by too much competition or testosterone?

Not in the spring.
The winter flights are huge when they come. we can shoot them then.

We see them fly over here sometimes. I've never seen them stop. I guess we don't have anything to stop for. No water and no food.

They are usually really high and in really big groups.
