Now unfortunately I live in Kansas, but by God's grace at least there are some mule deer to hunt in the Western part of the state.  Taken 3 of them so far (buck, and 2 does).  Biggest of the group was about 275 lbs.

Now theirs a contractor from Montana at work who told me thet the mulies get up near 400 lbs where he lives.  Stopped drinkin my coffee mid-sip, an looked over the cup at him.  Now I didn't call him a bull-shxter but if them deer are thet big then the Elk must be over 1/2 ton.  So jest how big are them beasts you guy's have up there?

i know for sure that they get well over 300lbs. here in montana, and i wouldn't doubt it if they went as high as the guy said. it is possible, i think.

put it this way, i haven't heard of it, but it wouldn't surprise me.

i keep trying to tell ya, spot! forget colorado or wyoming! montana where it's at!

the biggest bodied deer i've ever shot was a mulie doe. she didn't make the 400 lb mark, but easily cleared 300. i've seen some pretty big mulies. i have no doubt that some would come awful close to 400 lbs, but, here at least, i don't think you'll find any that reach 400.

Hunting is not a matter of life or death; it is much more important than that.

We get some real monsters here in B.C. I shot one in 1968 that weighed 276 lbs with no head, no hide and, of course, no insides. This deer would have gone well over 400 on the hoof. In that same area, my buddies and myself over a 5 year period, took 6 deer that dressed in excess of 225 lbs [ no head or hide, either] so there are a few dandies around. Biggest doe I ever took weighed 177 lbs. Regards, Eagleye.

In my state, we have transplanted elk in a secret place where a big one weighs between 400 and 500 lbs. These are Roosevelt Elk brougnt over from out west back in the day. We also have wild boar imported from Europe/Russia somewhere. And yes, i do believe Russia should be considered its own subcontinent, because a country in my book cant be in two continents at the same time.

There are mulies on the Marias River that will go 400#. And the big ones do look like elk among the herds when they come down to hte valleys in the evening.

And yes, there are some elk that top a thousand here. I took one that went 960 after being dressed, and ten hours after being killed. There was one down at Rollins, a seven point I put a guy onto, that went 1176. It happened to fall on a log landing, so we rolled him in the back of the truck, and took him to the butcher shop about a mile away to be tended to and weighed. Easiest pack job I was ever in on.

Morning SPOT SHOOTER  >>  I'd also agree with that MT fella telling you about our large Mulies.  400 lbs. is big and something not always encountered, but they are out there.  Mulies over 300 lbs. are common place, and can be had each season if you hold out for them.

That's why I love the Mulies.  Everything about them is big.  Horns, bodies, country they live in.  Just a beautiful animal to watch (and hunt).  Later.  >>  klallen

Spot shooter,

A little information for you.

Mule Deer

Odocoileus hemionus

North American Mule Deer Record: Typical Antlers: 226-4/8 Boone and Crockett (B&C) points, taken by Doug Burris, Jr. in Dolores, Colorado in 1972. Nontypical Antlers: 355-2/8 B&C points, taken by Ed Broder in Chip Lake, Alberta in 1926.

Common Names: muley, gray deer

The mule deer is our biggest deer (of the Odocoileus genus, including mule deer, Blacktail deer, Whitetail deer and their subspecies). It has the biggest body, the biggest antlers, and the biggest ears (large, mule-like ears from which the deer gets its name). It's fitting, then, that the mule deer lives primarily in North America's biggest country: the Rocky Mountain West of the U.S. and Canada.

They can reach a max. weight of 500 pounds, with most going between 200 to 300 and more pounds. I’ve taken a number of them in Montana that went over 300 pounds. The man was telling it straight. Lawdog

Fella's

I saw a 209 mulie rack taken in the fall of 2000.  Here in the shop's garage we've got one that hasn't been scored yet that may very well be in the upper reaches of B&C.  I don't know what the body weight of either animal was, but at or over 400 would be believable.

Howdy Gents:

I saw a mule deer once on the side of the road, south of Morrison Colorado.  Looked like a dang horse it was so big.

The problem with the rat race is, even if you win, you are still a rat.
