Topic: Sharps 1874 CarbinePosted: 20 June 2003 at 15:52 |

Hey guys, seeing as it is not looking too good with the Savage 99 in .303 Savage, i was wondering what you guys thought of this rifle http://www.gunbroker.com/auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=9653286. It is in .45-70 and i would load it with cast bullets that i would make myself, and load it with 55 gr. black powder patched load. The bullet would probably be 405 gr. because this is the load used during the Indian Wars in the 1873 Sprngfld Carbine. I remember that RollingB recommended this rifle model to me so i looked it up and this one is 490 dollars no reserve. It also ends in 9 days, so i would have time to get part of the money and have my dad spot me the rest until i could get it to him. So what do you guys think of it? NH_Hunter |

NH_Hunter,....Thanks fer post'n information pretain'n to "which" Sharps, you was talk'n 'bout.
I thot you said it was a Navy Arms Sharps (which is made by Pedersoli, and retails fer 'bout $1,000). Instead, it appears to be a IAB Sharps (though made in Italy like the Pedersoli, it is NOT the same "QUALITY" as tha Pedersoli). IMHO,....$490.00, is "almost" too much fer tha IAB (last one I bot was $400.00 2 years ago). Also, IAB uses the 1853-style hammer (hold-over frum tha percussion model). However,....for a "first-time Sharps", the IAB is a fair-quality rifle. One other "observation",....it looks to me (frum tha pitcher) thet ther is sumpthin "funky" up by the "transfer-bar" (maybe sum sort of "saftey" or sumpthin), I don't remember the IAB thet I used ta have, have'n what appears to be a liddle "sheet-metal" thingy 'tween tha hammer'n transfer-bar. Very best regards!! YMHS rollingb/Rondo |

Do you think it is worth dishing out the extra cash to get the Navy Arms one? I very well could do that but it would take me longer to get hte money i.e. three weeks of work. NH_Hunter |

NH_Hunter,.... IMHO, tha "Pedersoli Model 1874 Target/Hunter" is 3-times tha rifle, thet tha IAB is,....at only 2-times tha price!!

I found one with a buy now of 695, which i dont know if i want to dish out that kind of cash. It would put a dent in my earnings, and i would still have to get all the stuff to load it with. I think i will wait for one to come up that is more in my price range. It is a good sign that there arent a lot on the market. It means that people who buy them, love them, and dont want to part with them. NH_Hunter |

The Lyman GPR is just too god damn heavy. I dont like carrying rifles that are 8 lbs. fully loaded. Think of that! I am only 5'3 and am not that strong, so a 9 lb rifle is outa the question. I may buy the kit for a wall hanger, eventually hunt with it. But use it mostly for target practice. NH_Hunter |

NH: If you want to look at an outstanding value on an original rifle in .45-70 look at the Trapdoor Springfield for sale on this website: http://www.griffinhowe.com/riflemoreinfo.cfm For $599, I think this is a good deal, IF the bore is in good condition. |

NH Hunter - I've owned a Sharps carbine in the past, and shot a friends' again a couple weeks ago. First off, I didn't find them very accurate at any longer ranges, say 150 yards, at all. Secound, these are a light rifle. They kick. Alot. Factory loads would make snot fly from ones' nose, and draw unpleasant comments from bystanders. I'd suggest something with a heavier barrel, or overall weight. The Springfield is a good suggestion in a full size rifle.

Hey Sluggo, i cant get a trapdoor springfield because i cant adjust the sight. I could have gotten one for around 300-400 dollars, and i shot it. The recoil wasnt too bad. It shot 6 inches high and about 3 to the right. We could not figure out how to adjust the sight. It was factory sighted in for 200 yards, and in new hampshire, that is useless. Waksupi, i can handle the recoil just fine. I would load it with 55gr. blackpowder with patches to compress it behind a 405 grain flatnose bullet. NH_Hunter |

NH: This rig has the period replacement sight, the Buffington sight. It is a ladder type sight so it would be good for all ranges from 50 (I think)yards on up. Other than being highly optimistic (since it is graduated to 2,000 yards) the sight is very practical. 2,000 yards with a .45-70, now that would be some shooting! It is windage adjustable also. You could always call G&H and ask them about the rifle and the sight. I'll tell you what, if I could find good, original Trapdoors for $300 I'd buy as many as I could find. Most of them have bad bores from the black powder, though. |

Hey Sluggo, i dont have much use for that Trapdoor springfield because it is just too damn long and heavy. I am looking for something in .45-70 that is under 8 lbs, and is a fairly decent price. If i wanted to i could get a Ruger #1 in .45-70 with the walnut stock for a decent price. I just wanted to check out my other options first. I really wanted a Ruger #3 carbine for a while, that thing weighs less than 6 lbs. Think of the recoil of THAT in .45-70 because that is what i was going to get. NH_Hunter |

Hey NH: Ah, I see. Seems like a Marlin 1895 .45-70 lever gun weighs in about 7.5 pounds. They have one with a 22" barrel and a 18.5" barrel. Personally, I don't think the .45-70 recoil is that bad, sorta like a shotgun. |

The recoil is like a baby in the #1 because of the really nice recoil pad. I may just go #1 route, and then i can have the other .45-70 #1 than my dad. He has the stainless/laminate version. If i did get a #1 i dont know what I would put for glass on it. Probably a leupie of some sort because i need the eye relief. Or better yet, how about a peep sight. If only it had a hammer instead of a tang saftey, that eliminates the possiblilty of a tang sight. NH_Hunter |

If you're lokking for a good, inexpensive 45/70, Take a look at the H&R Handi-Rifle. Wally-World has 'em for about $200.00 more or less.

Hey soggyshooter, i am looking for something that is a replica of a gun that made a part in history. I dont really like the looks of the H&R HandiRifle, and it doesnt have the historical appeal that i am looking for. The Sharps has that. If/When i get a sharps, i am going to put a tang sight on it. It probably wont see too much hunting action, but it might be in sass matches eventually. It will also be a nice looking wall hanger, and a pretty good self defense gun. You never know when a rat or squirrel might eat your garbage and you have to dispose of it. NH_Hunter |

If it is anything like the factory loads that i have shot i.e. Winchester Super X, then it should be just fine. NH_Hunter |
