Since it stormed all day I took the chance to do some weighing. I did some .223 cases and bullets. I hope my numbers don't bore you.

CASES, 4 of each at random:
FED
98.7 98.4 97.7 97.5 spread 1.2
RP
93.8 95.2 94.1 96.1 spread 2.3
WIN
95.9 95.1 96.1 95.2 spread 1.0
PMC
92.9 94.2 93.5 93.1 spread 1.3
LC
93.6 94.6 94.9 95.0 spread 1.4

Hornaday Bullets:
SP
60 60.3 60.1 60.2 60.2
V-max
55.3 55.4 55.2 55.2 55.4

I was glad to see the bullets being close, but was surprised to see such a spread in the cases, maybe it's normal. I'm sure other people have weighed cases, do you see such spreads? How about brand to brand? Also, is not LC considered Military brass? I would have expected them to be on the heavier side. Oh well, any comments?

I weigh all new batches of cases and have found similar results.Lapua and norma have the smallest spread in a batch but may vary batch to batch.Of the common brands win allways seems to be the smallest spread.

With projectiles I weighed 400 sierras to get 100 match projectiles. Most of the others were only.1 either way but some were .4.

Berger projectiles are very close to the mark with 90% falling on the money and the rest at .1 either way.

Win projectiles about 50% of the last batch were on the money then a spread of .2 either way.

Anyone who only hunts may not be worried by this but in competitions measured to .001 to decide winners it can be a killer.Have a good one macca.

in an effort to see how tight of a group i can shoot, i'll weigh everything. part of my philosophy on handloading is consistency/repeatability.

i've found hornady bullets to have quite an amazing spread of weights. for instance, i weighed 100 162 grain btsp interlocks in 7 mm and came up w/ an amazing variance in weight (up to 1.8 grains either way). i was amazed that they would group at all...but, not only did they group, they proved to be the most accurate bullet in my rifle.

as far as cases go, i've found winchester to be pretty consistent. just depends how high your standards are for how many cases will wind up culled. when i do development, every case weighs the same (right down to the .1 grain) - this eliminates at least 1 variable in loading... and the more variables you can control, the faster the development process goes.

Hunting is not a matter of life or death; it is much more important than that.

bk,

Remington loading components are the worst on the market period.  They have always had a greater deviation than any others I've found.  Winchesters are uniformly pretty tight give the cost.  (new cartridges are an exception for first couple of years - debugging)

This is why remington gun's are so good - If they can shoot that crappy ammo and still group then their rifle consistancy is good.  Best way to get good groups - shoot winchester ammo out of a remington gun.  Note I currently don't own a remington.

BK,
when Im bored with a scale I lose weight...
But seriously, I found it interesting there was so much weight diff. in cases.
And was very surprised about the Hornady bullets.
I have a 17hmr and only shoot vmax or Rem out of it and it goups great.

Spot shooter,
I would have to agree, I currently have 3 Remingtons, and shoot winchester out of 2 of them. The third is a Rem.597 and I found it shoots best with Rem. yellow jacket hp.
