I thought I'd start my own thread instead of derailing D's thread any more than I already have.

You guys have got me thinking about screwing a barrel onto an action and seeing how accurate I can make it. The problem I'm having is what caliber do I want to go with.

I don't really want to go with something I already have or something that's real close to something I have.

I don't have anything in 7mm and have kinda thought about a 7mm-08. A 7X57 would also interest me but I assume brass is harder to find.

I gave my twin daughters matching .257 Roberts and that's one I really like. I also got talked out of a .250 Savage that I also liked.

I know I'm overlooking a whole bunch of other cartridges but these have come to mind.

What are your thoughts on these and do you have any other suggestions?

Long or Short action Magnum maybe?
7mm/08 and 7x57 are very close to each other.
Both are very good choice.
Ever thought of a 8x57? Only problem there is brass and limited bullet selection. Any of the 7mm are very accurate. 280 AI is one and a 7 creedmoor would be the direction I think I'd go.
Just my thoughts.Big smile

I'd suggest 260 Remington.  Fit medium or long action.  Brass is just a standard 308 run thru your 260 FL die.  Identical ballistics to the swed, and if you like the shorter 308 action, makes a light walk around rriffle.
shoots light bullets and up to a 140 grain for elk.

just thoughts.

Great suggestions. Any of those would fit exactly what I want to do.

That also makes the point of why I'm having a hard time deciding.

Actually, ammo, brass, bullets selection isn't a problem for most cartridges today 8mm, 7mm, 257, 260 all available on line.

No, I haven't decided yet.

I have too many projects going on at once. I got sidetracked lightening up my .308. I replaced the scope with the Leupold 2-7 you guys recomended and am hoping I can come up with a lightweight bipod.

Then maybe I'll get back to a rebarrel plan.
