we all know Saami has standards for pressure reloading, and most reloading manuals stay at that number. 55000 or 60000 generally. this has been to avoid problems in older rifles or in damaged rifles. Overall a good idea. GAME CHANGER???? The new 7mm Back Country has approved this cartridge for 80000 psi in the same rifles. If 80000psi is ok for a steel cartridge, should it not be safe now to go to 80000 in a brass case in those same newer rifles?? We do load for speed AND accuracy, but not to sacrifice accuracy. We also seldom load MAX. On my 8 we are over "book" speed there is no information using RL26 and hammer bullets (3229 fps 200 gr HH). We watch very close for signs, and measure the cases often. As with the 7x57 AI we use max for standard 57 loads. Again with hammer bullets you get around 100 fps faster then book speeds.(2925 fps with 145 HHT bullets) and sub .5" groups. We do find most copper bullets any brand get there best accuracy close to max and a "jump" to the lands. My steel loads for the shotguns I push slightly, and my coyote 1.5 oz loaded with Steel brand powder hand cast TTT size shot, I only shoot in 870s or my stoeger, and never give them to other people. I think speed kills. I also think a slow bullet through the heart will kill better than a fast bullet through the foot. I'll take accuracy over speed. That being said I try to find a load that is accurate and as close to max as I can get. I don't really understand nodes but when I was working with my swede I found that a load at 2600 fps that was accurate then as I increased the powder charge it started spreading out then came back together at about 2850 fps. I assume that's always possible unless you see pressure before getting the group to come back together? Is that a node? ------------- I have always considered myself to be quite the bullshitter, But ocasionally it is nice to sit back and listen to a true professional......So, Carry on. |

It must be Bear, I don't get the "node" thing either. When we get a load/bullet that works well we will try similar powder and bullet with the same load and see if it's better or worse. We have not seen a great difference in brand of primers as long as there the "same" primer, maybe a bit of a consistency thing, but Bench primers may be a bit better.

wing, I think what you are seeing are barrel harmonics. The barrel vibrates differently at different velocities. Seems you barrel wasn't 'in tune at 1700 fps, but was at 2600 and 2850 ------------- “ The IQ and the life expectancy of the average American recently passed each other in opposite directions.” |

I usually find a bullet that I want to use and try different powders until I find a combination that is satisfactory. Usually sticking with the same bullet. If I don't find a powder that works I will try a different bullet. Like you, I don't see much difference with primers. I usually use CCI standard large rifle primers but have tried Federal Gold Medal Match primers and don't really see a difference. I also have good luck with Winchester primers. I think you are right Bear. Barrel harmonics makes more sense as to what I'm seeing.
