The state keeps changing the regs to hunt deer in urban areas.  when I was a kid any firearm was ok where I live.  then they made it shotgun only and for the last 30 years I had a 20 ga single with a scope.

Then 3 years ago they changed to Ohio like restrictions adding straight walled rifles.  So I converted my M1 carbine to straight pull, non autoloading.

Now they added straight walled cartridges must be 44 caliber or larger.  So my 30 cal is out.  My 375 pistol is also out.  seems that means 44 mag, 45 colt, and 45-70 will rule.  All the new straight walled cartridges made strictly for these stupid states are out.  Last year I almost bought a 350 Legend...thankfully not!

So yesterday day, I reviewed all my 'stuff'.  Assembled, a 44 mag T/C with red dot sight and shoulder holster.  Bore sighter it with laser and got 50 reloads.  Will take 2-3 at range to confirm and I'll be ready again.

What is the reason for these restrictions?

I think you should make this an opportunity to buy a new gun. I'm thinking something like a S&W model 29 with a 6" or 8" barrel. Or maybe a Winchester lever action in .44 magnum.

Got a marlin 92   44 mag lever gun and a 44 Contender.

But, a new gun is always a good idea.

I've always liked leverguns. I've never had one that was real accurate but maybe that is because of the shooter.

We probably have 8-9 lever guns in the family, mostly Marlin 336s.  But also win 1892 and win 71.

The 71 is cool, big shooter, largest lever rifle win ever made.  The marlins ar tack drivers in 30-30 and 35 rem.

Now you have me wanting to get my 336 out and see if I can make it shoot. I have only shot factory loads through it but I do have 30-30 dies. I bet it will shoot better with the right load.

Over the years, I've found 30-30 easy to load.  with the new FX plastic nose bullets it is even enough for PDs out to 200 yards.

No rifle carries as nice as a lever rifle!

From what little I've read about loading 30-30 IMR 3031 is kinda the classic powder to use. I don't have any of that. The closest thing I have according to the burn rate chart is IMR 4064. I haven't looked in the data books yet but I assume 4064 would work good. If not, Varget isn't too far off from 4064 and I have had great luck using Varget in several different cartridges.

Am I on the right track?

Well, I broke down and unpacked a Marlin 1892 that is NIB, purchased in 1985.  Was  keeping it as trade goods.  But will now hunt it.

Adding Uncle Mikes QD swivels to mag tube, Vortex 2-7x in weaver Quad mounts, Claw sling.

Now I have a rifle and pistol in 44 mag, will need a load that works for both.
