What are your thoughts on the 99 Savage? Do you have one or have you had one? Are they accurate? reliable?
I've thought about them for years. I think I would either want one in 250-3000 or 300 Savage. Both cartridges are real close to what I already have, .257 Roberts and .308 but I don't think that really matters.

Don't own one. But would like on withe the rotary magazine and the little brass shell indicator window,
250 and 300 Savage are both good rounds.
Some of the older ones are in 303 Savage and therefore sell a little heaper. 303 S is like a 30-30 but uses .311 bullets, although some folks load it with std .308 bullets.
Over the years, Savage made the 99 in lots of cartridges:
.303 Savage, .32-40 Winchester, .300 Savage, .30-30 Winchester, .25-35 Winchester, .250 Savage, .22 Savage Hi-Power, .22-250 Remington, .243 Winchester, .308 Winchester, .358 Winchester, 7mm-08 Remington, .284 Winchester, .38-55 Winchester, .375 Winchester, .410 bore

It's a gun I very seldom see in shops around here. I'm pretty sure I'll have a lot of time to think about what cartridges I would like.
25-35 Winchester would be interesting.

The old ones were popular around here for deer out to abot 150 yards. Later Savage chambered 243/308/358 but they couldn't compete with bolt rifles for longer range.
I'll scout the LGS for some.

Accuracy is one thing I was concerned about. We don't get a lot of shots under 150.

Well, for A lever action they were some of the more accurate.
The win model 88 was probably the most accurate lever action.
But my win 92 is the 'slickest'.

I have 2 760 Remingtons. They are pretty accurate. Not quite as accurate as my bolt actions but definitely accurate enough for hunting.
My understanding is that they are very popular in your neck of the woods. I'm sure they are great for hunting out to at least 300 yards.

Yep, he no. 1 deer rifle here. Semi-autos are illegal, so folks like the rapid fire of a pump rifle. Most are '06 and guys usually shoot 180 grain; way more than needed for mountain whitetail.
Some olde guys like the 760 in 35 Remington, a real eastern deer stopper.

Mine are both in .270. (Inherited)
They both shoot pretty good but they are the only ones I've seen in my area.

They are accurate as they use a rotating bolt, like a regular bolt action lock up.
270, about as good an all round cartridge as any, so said Jack Oconnor.

I have never took a liking to the 99s. Not sure why, but I don't like the way they fit. BLR is a great shooting lever gun. My Dad has had a 308 version for years and killed many bucks with it. I have one in 257Rbts and 284W. Both are super accurate.

The older Savage 99's were great guns....the cartridge counter window bear mentions is really neat & practical too. Those early guns were well built. The trigger guard safety is not southpaw friendly tho.

I have a BLR in 7mm-08 and I don't feel it has any "kick" of any consequence. But it HITS like a .308W on the target end while remaining "friendly" in recoil to the shooter. I think it is a fine cartridge for deer type big game & good for younger or slight of build shooters too.

"felt kick" is really more of the way the stock design and the shooters holding. Recoil from all 308 is identical if the same cartridge.

I haven't seen a 99 Savage let alone one in 250-3000.
They are scarce around here. Either not popular or people really like them and never get rid of them.

250-3000 came out in 1925 primarily as a deer/varmint cartridge. The '06 was already out in Western hunters hands. An d 10 years later the 270 was THE western rifle. so the 250-3000 had just a few years to be adopted by shooters. And the lever action 99 wasn't thought of as accurate, sort of a Maine deer rifles.
So not many to be found out there.
I've slacked off, but will continue looking for one for you Wing.
Regarding elk...as you know they are WAY bigger than the average deer. Twice the thickness if you want an exit hole. So, I think that while 25, and 6.5 will work; more is needed in a dedicated elk rifle.
Remember I always use enough gun and have used my 9.3x62 to anchor an Idaho elk a few years ago. It didn't move!

I don't know if it was that way back then but , as you know, we are at least 10 maybe 15 years behind the rest of the country. If that was the case, The .270 was pretty well known by the time people around here heard about the 250-3000.
Believe it or not, When I first got to hunt deer in the late 70's it wasn't unusual to see people around here carrying 30-30's out in the field.
I agree that bigger is better but if I was lost somewhere on the great plains of Wyoming and had to survive the rest of my life I would be comfortable with anything from 25 caliber to .30.

Lots of hunter here in the east still think 30-30 is greatest deer rifle...and it might just be.
