As wing said packs seem to grow heavier every year, and I grow weaker every 6 months. But thought we might share what we carry into hunt in our packs. two unusual things I carry: I hunt alone so I have aerial flares (5). also when going into the forest for an all day hunt (5am to 6PM) I carry a can of soup and a aluminum stove...soup weighs 12 oz and stove is 8 oz, spoon is 1 oz. I don't think I have any unusual things but my problem is I have duplicates of just about everything in my pack. I'm going to scale down to these items. If anyone can think of a nessesity that I'm forgetting please chime in. Gutting and skinning knife Headlight with 1 extra set of batteries Para cord Rubber gloves A small package of wet wipes. Small pelvis saw 10 rounds at the most of extra ammo Ink pen Backpackers first aid kit (small and lightweight) Besides this, I have a rangefinder and GPS but they are in my jacket pocket. Anything I'm forgetting? Wing How about a coyote skinning gambrel, Extra blade for the Havalon knife. A pack of Quickclot, and a spare lighter. Lens wipe, and coyote drag bag. I leave the saw, and pen out. ------------- Remember: Four boxes keep us free ,the soap box, the ballot box, the jury box, AND the cartridge box |

I always travel with 3 compasses. got lost in thick mountain laurel about 52 years ago. light weight plastic ball compasses, pin on with extra 2 in pacck (zero weight). D I carry a hemostat for changing blades on the Havelon knife....can cut. med kit ???? with Quikclot weight 4oz. I had to use a quikClot at the ER last week. I'd lost 1/4 cup blood during the night. big mess, scared wife...so to the ER. Kept the clot pad on for 3 days of mountain hunting with extras in my pack. Bear, I too am on blood thinners and know very well just how difficult it is to stop bleeding, even with a very small cut. So, thanks for the valuable information as I just ordered one from your Amazon post.

It's good stuff. I have an ER buddy that says it sucks to work with after the fact, Some occasions it make for a worse injury to get it out and the blood flowing again. Use with caution. If it is an artery it will block the whole thing some times. I have a couple tubes of Wound Seal in my first aid kit. It's a powder that is supposed to stop bleeding. The stuff you guys are talking about is a bandage/compress with a clotting solution on it? I wonder what is better to have. I used Wound Seal one time and it worked good. Well.....I don't pack much....don't go anywhere where I need to pack much. I do still shove in the back of my jacket a bottle of water,(small), plastic garbage bags x2, pack of jerky, usually peanut M&M's and a granola bar. Keeps my knife, gloves, rag, tissue paper and a tampon company in the other pockets I have used lithium grease and duct tape for some field medical requirements as well as electrical tape and a chunk of rag. I full on recommend keeping your brain functioning as it should be able to make due with what you have. As a certain fella from Kentucky recently can attest too, sometimes you just gotta put a thumb in it! Should I switch to a lighter container for my booze and educational reading materials?  ------------- ...oh yeah! thats gonna hurt! |

For the last week, I've been hunting 'light' with no day long sitting. So to keep mt pack lite, I stopped taking my small SS theros of coffee (sad, I love my coffee). Instead I'm taking a small bottle of water, AND the night before I insert a tea bag (like Picard it is EARL GRAY). it makes very pleasant sugar free ice tea drink; and no empty SS thermos to cart around. ------------- “ The IQ and the life expectancy of the average American recently passed each other in opposite directions.” |

Changing hunting season from rifle to flintlocks only, so redoing pack. Found something in there I'd recommend. I carry a small roll of TUMs anti-acid. sometimes breakfast or last nights dinner doesn't sit well when miles from truck.
