I have a spc draw doe mule deer tag in a 3 week season area. The boy is helping a good buddy of his on a trophy MD buck hunt 5 hours to the east. He will be gone till Friday. We did a river hunt opening day with no success. We have reservations on a BIG ranch up north this weekend. SOOO I thought I would try and fill the doe tag in the "off" time. The area is only 60 miles to the north west of me. On the map there is a lot of block management land, ( just sign in and hunt) and a 10 sq mile hunk of state land. Sounds easy? This is on Monday Morning, I get there and start to look around. I saw deer and some where easy does, but every small group of deer I saw already had 3 or 4 trucks on them. I just can't hunt like that. I have had hunters walk in on me and I hate it, most the time no one gets a deer. Anyway, I found a section of state land far from the Malay and on a county road, no one near me or the land. I'm stopped on the road glassing, I see two deer both laying down and looking away. I ranged them, 280 yards from the road. It's all open pasture with a small dry creek where they where out of the wind. In stead of just leaving the truck on the side of the road and sliding down to the fence and ducking under and shooting them. I drive past to a turn off spot and got out, put on the orange and sneak out under the cover of a very small rise. I get to were I thought I would be well under 200 yards and peeked over. They must have gotten nervous and got up. They where still there feeding but 300 yards away and walking. I could have tried a moving 300 yard shot but I kept sneaking every time I peeked they where over 300 yards and still moving. they finally just walked off public land on to private, no deer for me.
I'll try again but in a less popular part of the unit.
