Fisher Oil Creek and Big Sandy Creek yesterday.  Some ice chunks still on banks, but creeks are running clear.  5 rainbows, lost 3, froze my hands.  about a 2 hour drive from house.  Nice rookery of Great Blue herons I pass on the way.

I wear wool pants and alpaca socks under 5 mm neoprene chest waders,  that makes my body comfortable in ice water (if I don't fall).  But hands contacting wet fly lines means lots of cold.

I fished a #14 Sucker Spawn light green. and a red San juan worm.      8# line.

I hate fly fishing. I hate trout. I hate cold wet hands.
But other then that sounds like a wonderful day.
By the way our "Big Sandy creek" only runs a few weeks a year and is never clear, More like very thin "Gumbo" running down hill.Big smile

I went down to Custer forest last year, never saw so many flies. We get more mosquitoes and yellow jackets up here, too early for either though.

In High School, had an Science elective class, building a fly rod, tying flies and going fishing. I'm sure they no longer offer classes like that.

I never liked playing with my food, so didn't ever fit in with most fly fishermen. Even a hammer handle pike or a perch on a 6 weight rod is a lot of fun though. Broke fly rod, I built on catfish, mouse popper fishing for bass.

nothing like seeing a trout dimple the surface 35 foot away.  Then casting a fly you tied, and watching the fly land softly on the surface.  And it floats 6 inches down stream and then it is engulfed in a fraction of a second and your line goes tight.

Of course in this weather, the line is frozen in the rod guides and if you had any feeling in your fingers they would be burning!   fun stuff.
