Every 3-6 months thereabouts. A good carry is very lightly cared for and sloppy in tolerances. Excess lube just makes gummy lint globs etc... Also if you have to eat dirt quick a tight gun may have cycling issues over a sloppy one that can be buried in mud and sand, dug up and still functions flawlessly. Never thought of them as a fashion statement, more of a functional piece of kit that should match your wits. Wearing a CCW piece with worn finish and patina shows it's doing it's job by getting carried. Don't get me wrong, a good wiping down from time to time is a good thing and sending a few downrange a couple times a year is a good thing, but a carry piece and a safe queen/range toy are two completely different tools. I worry more about cleaning the kydex or leather then what they hold. ------------- ...oh yeah! thats gonna hurt! |

After looking at some of mine....not often 'nuff apparently. Seems they gather lint and dust from who knows where. When I do clean them I try to use a lubricant that won't gather dust etc over time or gum up either over time. One product I like is BALLISTOL. I also use Ballistol. It's good stuff. I clean mine about every three or four months. I usually run a magazine of ammo through it every time I go to the range. My thought on that is that the round that I have chambered and unloaded each night when I get home gets shot and a new one gets put in the chamber to keep the bullet from being pushed back into the case. In the summer I carry a revolver so I don't unload it every night. but I still try to run 5 rounds through it every time I go to the range. first thing is synchronization. the Pawl wears and the cylinder and barrel don't align properly. can be fixed; I've had 2 re done. In double action the sears get smoother with wear but eventualy they don't coordinate properly. I think with an ocassional repair, a sa/da revolver like a S&W model 10 is good for 70,000 rounds or 100 years what ever comes first. Modern heat treatment and metals make a good Smith a perpetual perfect machime. (Ruger also) Having said that...I need another.

A bunch of sweet talking and an offer that can't be refused could land you with an S&W 686 .357 with one helluva smooth trigger... though I'm not sure my sis will part with it. CCW= Counter Clock Wise. My son is overseas, so he left his CC weapon with me. a month later I looked in the case: Glock 9mm with 7 loaded clips in a fanny custom pak. He must be expecting an army of attackers.
