Seems like ticks are really heavy this year. Two friends have
Lymes disease this week, one hospitalized 3 days. Permethrin works instantly, and I buy it by the quart. I spent most of today in heavy woods removing deer stands, real tick infested areas. Picked 3 off me. Little bas%$#ds. |

I agree with you. Every time I walk through the
blackberries or raspberries I come in with at least one. I've had as many as four at once. I've even been in for the blood testing once this spring. My son laments about having to check his dogs each night. Our winter was on the mild side and that is what we are blaming the high number of ticks on. I was doing outside work this spring and some time in the middle of one afternoon I realized I was walking around with a woody. Now that's something that hadn't happened since the early days of marriage and this one came with a particular itching. I remember thinking that this can't be good. A quick check and there was a tick on my ***** well anchored in place creating a sizable area of swollen skin. Took care of the tick but went right over to my local Dr.. That was the blood test. He commented, half serious, that perhaps I was on to something that might eventually compete with Viagra. Nothing I'm really interested experimenting on my own with says I. Be careful!

Sam was bitten by the most uncommon of all the ticks, The "bubbly" tick. It's a hybrid of the two, main side effect is 7-UP! ------------- ...oh yeah! thats gonna hurt! |

The little custards do have a strong will to anchor in
very solidly and securely as anyone who has removed one can attest to. Just ponder that for a moment. Like trying to pull out a stitch with forceps. The concern is leaving a piece of the head buried. I have had several burrow into my side and after removing them a 1/8th inch area of black tissue develops and a scab persists sometimes for a year or more. It appears that the bite killed some surrounding tissue. I think that the digestive enzymes in the gut of the tick may get extruded out into the tissue during the pulling out process and attack the localized tissue. That's what I think. I have since obtain one of the 'scoops' with the fine slot in it for easier removal. I also now soak a cotton ball in 91% rubbing alcohol and band-aid it in place over the tick and leave it for a length of time. Not just a couple of minutes. I think the alcohol dehydrates the tick and decreases the chance of it spitting out digestive juices. At least there have been no necrotic tissue issues lately. The twist and pull method works for me....keeping the alcohol to myself. 4 1/2 hours on the brush-hog yesterday.....spent a few minutes in search of any of the little blighters, even with a mirror for the hard to see places,( ),and fortune shined upon me with none to be found......I was paranoid.------------- ...oh yeah! thats gonna hurt! |

Interesting Sam. I always thought the hairy groin would be
a target. They like hairy areas, mine ate usually at the back of my head/neck. I always duct tape my pants to my boots, so maybe that is why they are more on my head. The best way is to just put a glob of Vaseline on them, they back out when they get no oxygen. Using alcohol can make them sick and the upchuck into the body! Tweezers will usually break them in half, and that leaves the head in. Hunting in Virginia last Feb and unknowingly got one on my chest, scratched it in two when itching in my truck. had to cut it out. I can't say how much I hate these things |

As far as I know, I've never had a tick burrow into me. I've only found a couple on me runnin' around too. They're hard to kill, but they seem to leave me pretty much alone & I'm not complainin'. I take it I'd know for sure if one did decide to eat on me. 900F ------------- Birth certificate!? He don't need no steenkink birth certificate!! |

Thinking seriously of shaving my beard off tomorrow. Don't
know what is hiding in their. Don't know if it works, but for the last year I shower with Tea Tree Oil soap. Critters don't like the oil an bail out. |

rumor has it if you soak a embedded wood-tick with kerosene and then hold a match over it the heat will drive it out. We have lots of ticks here in midwest and deal with them every year. They are in GRASS as much or more then the woods. "SERESTO" Remember this name for your dog's next tick collar. It lasts about 8mths and cost is around $50 but sometimes there is a $15 rebate for them. Try online or your local vet. Shaved the beard off!
flea collars work by releasing poison into the dog thru his skin. should be careful using on older or sick dogs. Never put two on at the same time (some people do!) it can OD your pet. Obviously never use on humans, we live longer than dogs. |

The best way I have found to get rid of ticks is to cover them with a gob of dishwashing liquid, they will back right out after a couple of minutes. ------------- Molon Labe "Come take Them" |

yep, dawn works fine. I like Vaseline, it doesn't run
off. |
