Not brand new but new to me.
Its a Model 29. Has a 6.5 inch barrel and is new
enough to have the stupid key lock.
I put together Some hand loads with 240 grain
Hornady XTPs and W 296.
If i remember correctly. S&W Made some changes to
the 29 To make it a little stouter.
I think they did this before the key lock was
added. Does anyone remember ?
This 1st batch is well below book max , but i
pland to stiffen them up a bit over time.

What is the dash number? That's the number after the model number. This indicates the production changes it has.
The endurance package was added in 1987 to the model 29-3. Their were very few of these made. They were preparing for the 29-4.
The 29-8 was introduced in 2001 with the internal lock.
I assume yours is a 29-8. If it's a 29-9 it would be a performance center gun.
One other option is it could be the 44 Classic. These have a full lug barrel. This is unlikely though because they were discontinued in 1994. I am not sure, but I don't think any of them have the internal lock.

If I remember correctly, the general opinion is that the
pre-lock guns have a better factory trigger than the post-
lock guns. And, that the post-lock trigger is a screaming
beach to work on to get it up to par.
I've only got one post-lock S&W, and it's a 617/10. I do
know the trigger on that example isn't as good as a couple
of pre-lock guns I've handled.

My revolver is a Mdl-29-8
The single action trigger is excellent !
I tried it out today at 25 yards.
My Dumb self forgot to bring a screw driver to
adjust the sights.
It was shooting quite high. But I kept all my shots
on the paper.
I intend to order some lighter cast bullets and
develop some skill.
I did a ton of revolver shooting in my early 20s.
But i,m 56 now. Bifocals will take some getting used
to.
So if i understand your very hepfull post wing
master.My 29-8 is not a weapon i need to baby. Just
take care of it and don't do anything stupid and and
should be just fine ! Correct ?...tj3006

T'were me, I'd stay about one grain under max with a 240
grain jacketed bullet. That should still get you a
muzzle velocity in the high 1300's to very low 1400's. I
would think that'd be enough to do any reasonable job.
Plugging in reasonable numbers to the JBM calculator
gives these results using a 240 grain bullet, .170 B/C at
1400 fps muzzle with a 25 yard zero. Results rounded to
nearest whole number.
25 yards 1330 fps & 942 ft. lbs.
50 yards 1256 fps & 841 ft. lbs. with 1.4" drop.
75 yards 1190 fps & 755 ft. lbs. with 3.6"
100 yds 1134 fps & 685 ft. lbs. with 6.2" drop.

You're absolutely correct tj.
I don't think you could wear it out in your lifetime.
If you look at a reloading manual from the 50's or 60's you will notice the max loads are quite a bit higher than they are in a newer manual. Some of those old loads were pretty hot.
If you load according to a newer manual you should never have a problem.

The Hammer and trigger on Smith & Wessons starting about 1991 are made using a metal injection molded process.
The older ones were machined forged steel.
The MIM triggers have the reputation of not being as good as the earlier ones. In reality most of them are just as good. I think the MIM triggers are probably harder to smooth up if you didn't get a good one.
That being said, I only collect pre MIM pre lock S&W's.

I ordered 100 250 grain bullets from beartooth .
I will back down for awhile till i get better.
I remembered an old trick. Load only 4 in your
cylinder. When you click on an empty chamber , you will
know if you are flinching...tj3006

lady friend shooting tomorrow.
I used a lee dipper , and 2400 under the 240 grain
XTP.
The load should give around 1100 fps, so there will
be some recoil, but i still have 20 stiff loads should
she want to try them.
I might bring the Marlin 94 44 along to cause its
much more fun to hit what you shoot at...tj
