Fella's;

I went hunting this morning. Not big game, actually varmints. But nonetheless, hunting! There's a common rodent around here that's mis-named "gopher" & is really a ground squirrel. Regardless, they breed like flies & at the height of the season number in the millions. On a big spread, they can, and do, eat a hundred thousand dollars worth of hay during a season. Needless to say, it's fairly easy to get permission to shoot them.

I use my CZ452 American LHB in .22lr. The gun has a Nikon Monarch 3.5-10X A/O mil-dot scope mounted in Talley rings. I also use a Turner military sling. No bipods or shooting sticks need apply. Howcome? Because I figure I waste more time & energy toting them around & fooling with set-up than they're worth. Give me a good sling & the ability to use the mil-dot system on the fly as it were, and I'll kill more gophers in less time than the gimmick user.

During the gopher season, going through a brick a day is not unusual. But, if you want to getcher hits, the gun and yourself better be able to reliably pop a gopher at a hundred yards under field conditions.

So, out we were at around 10:00 AM. As it's early season, the shooting wasn't at the incredible pace I've seen it get to. But, I've got a lotta magazines for the 452 so they can be swapped & I keep shooting. However, when the temps rise, the sun shines, and the grass turns green. Katie bar the door! It's high gopher season.

Shootin' gophers really helps with big game hunting also. Learning to routinely deal with variable distances, wind angles and velocities, and shooting conditions is excellent training to get your eye ready for bigger things.

I'm lovin' it! But today was only about a coupla hundred shots.  Nonetheless, I'm practising for MYGAWDS.

There goes the gopher population down the tube....let CB alone in any field and the residents disappear.

Save us some....especially the larger ones for DD.LOL

WOW...and he was the top ammo burner last year.  the coyote fur market must pay well!!!Wink

I'd like to try the 17 machII but I don't have that rifle and the shell s are costly and tough to find.  I'll stick to Blazer Long rifle 22rf

Bear;

D4570 didn't wake up in time for Daylight Saving Time last year & missed the whole thing.  So, in a way, he shot the least.  But he also had the lowest body count too.  This year he says he plans on actually using his vaunted .17HMR.

I wanted to see the buffalo gun in action.  Does a loaded 45-70 weigh more than the average gopher?????

Not quite.

But two do.

 The rounds in the mag ( 10) weigh as much as the rifle...

Fella's;

Big centerfires are frequently not allowed for gopher shooting on these ranches.  Too much noise, disturbes the dogs, makes cakes fall in the oven, pisses off the wife, etc., etc..

Fella's;

Our newest member, Tom S, and I went out gopher shooting today.  They are now all dead.  Every single last one of them within 153.7 miles of Great Falls died.

Not to worry, by Friday next week there will be millions available if the sun shines.  If it doesn't, the numbers will drop, but still be in the millions although most of 'em will be underground.  Pray for sunshine!  Don't worry about the population, they actually breed faster'n flies.
