Folks,  We're having a not-so-friendly argument in the office about .284 case capacity.  My friend says that the .284 case capacity compares to a .308.  I say nonsense, that it compares to a '06.  I cited a comparison (based on my Lyman manual, from my desk) to a .280 and a 7-08 w/the powder capacity, of IMR4350 load, when using a 139 grainer.  He says that the case capacity, w/powder, when seating a bullet on it, doesn't relate to actual case capacity.  What is correct?

I would refer him to case spec, 284 body is aprox 1/4" longer, than 308 and is straight sided, instead of having 308s slight taper.  That said 284 doesn't have case cap of /06 either, it's closer to middle between the two, that's why they based 6.5x284 and 6x284 on it.

case capacity is based on the number of grains of water it will hold, full to the top of the neck,  not the amount of powder.

Your friend may have case length and case capacity mixed-up!

284 Win case length is close to the 308 Win.

284 Win case capacity is close to the 30-06.
