i've caught more fish with that than any other way, and it's the best and easiest as far as i am concerned - and damn cheap, too.
here's what you do - my instructions here are specifically for trout-sized fish, but you can modify sizes etc. as needed based on what you're going after.
get some egg sinkers - not big, just enough to get the bait out where you want it to be.
get some swivels - small ones with the snap.
get some hooks - "snelled" ones (#6, 8 or 10) that have the loop on them - i like eagle claws.
the rig is simple:
start with a bare line that has nothing on it.
run an egg sinker up the line.
tie a swivel on.
snap a hook on the swivel.
bait the hook and cast it.
i'll try to get some step-by-step pix of this posted sometime.

You can save wear on the line knot at the swivel, by adding a small plastic red sphere onto the line; when the sinker slides and hits the swivel, the weight will hit the red sphere not the knot.
I use this for most of my bait fishing. When baracuda are around I don't use the red bead. And even then when you get the desired fish hooked, the slider egge sinker will often times slide up the line and drag in the water. Especially if you are catching fast speed fish like bones, reds, etc. The 'cuda hits the dragging sinker and cuts the line.
Some people call this rig, 'the searcher' or 'the Finder'; as it is a good exploring rig. the key is the line can easily be pulled thru the egg sinker when the fish takes; so the fish can't feel the weight. A good rig.

hey, bear - that makes perfect sense about the red sphere - thanks for sharing the tip.

I just talked with the FWP Biologist on Monday the sturgeon Are there as we speak. If I split a 6 pack I'd have to spend the night too. I'd love to . I meant the milk river below Fresno any where down from there is supposed to be VERY good for cats and sturgeon coming up from the lake in SD. ?? I have never fished it.

they say there's supposed to be cats and sturgeon there but all my life i have never seen any. i asked around a few years ago and word is that they are actually below dodson dam, which makes sense, but that's quite a ways away, too.
where the milk river runs in this area, it's grerat for walleye, sauger, northern pike and other assorted species such as bullheads, whitefish, carp etc.
