IBD, I've thrown one a time or two but my best throwing tool was a 4" wide hatchet with a square hammer head on the back and a handle about 10" long. It was my mother's chicken killing axe. She had a couple of 10 penny nails driven an inch apart in an oak block about 2 feet tall and 18" across. She'd drop a chicken's neck in the nail slot and stretch the neck out by pulling on their legs. Thunk! A beheaded chicken. Might butcher 20 a day sometimes. But my brother and I used to throw it at the big elm tree by the chicken house. It would stick in the tree about 75% of the time too. RD

I tried it a couple of times in camp. Maybe stuck it in the stump 3 times out of a 100. Couldn't tell you anything about it as it was an old, cheap, rusty looking thing. I watch them doing it during Lumberjack competitions on the tube when they have them on and my hat goes off to them.

I've tried it a time or two. Was better throwing a K-bar into a door during my army years. It was a pastime while on overnight duty in the dispensary.

I bought a Cold Steel Riflrmans Hawk years ago. It was made in china even then. I introduced it to Mr. Belt grinder and made it a thing of beauty, grinding it straight and flat where it used to be then I polished it to about 500 grit and put a razor edge on it. It looks NOTHING like a chinese piece of dung, and in fact looks very custom. I thought of throwing it, but, I just can't seem to bring myself to do it. Maybe someday, but the main reason I bought it was to carry while hunting.....................Kingpin

I bought my son one of these for his birthday a couple of years ago. He takes it with him on field exercises and deployment as part of his personal gear. RD

WELL,,,I finally got my t-hawk to stick the first throw........kinda.I'm chuckin' at some 12" cut offs, the 'hawk hits the edge of a chunk on the handle just below the head, bounces off goin'faster than when I threw it,,,wizzes past me about crotch high, and sticks perfectly.......................in the left rear quarter panel of the wifes towncar!!!,,,I turned the car around so she won't see it right away, but I am sure I can cross the new rifle off the Santa list for this year

Justn.......pace back from your target with natural steps (no long or short ones) as if you were just walking normal....try 7 steps, square off to the target & if right handed thrower, place your right toes on the line and step into the target with your left foot as you throw/toss the 'hawk at the target........all the while keeping your eyes on the spot you want the 'hawk to hit on the target. YOU do NOT need to throw with all your upper body/arm strength.....as you throw & when your arm is fully extended release your fingers/grip (you don't need a death grip either) on the handle & keep your hand pointed at the target.........bingo! a hit and it sticks!...great job bud! If it don't stick try adjusting your "mark" a bit front or back until it does stick. OH, and move the wifes car to out behind the garage and out of sight of the target. ENJOY!

I use the same tecnique as when I throw a roofers hatchet, but the 'hawk bein' lighter ,I guess I could ease up on the "snap" at the end of the forward part of release,a 3 1/2 lb. fellin' axe aint no trouble at all,,,,go figger!!??
