By Paul Theroux.
I will start out by saying that I think Paul Theroux is one of the 20th
century's top 10 authors, side by side on that list with V.S. Naipaul,
because, well, they were friends as well as antagonists for decades.
In any event, Kingdom By The Sea
is a wonderful view of Britain from a traveler's point of view. The
grime, the greatness, the tawdry and the beauty are all here in what is
essentially Theroux's diary as he walks around the British coast,
clockwise.
No better look at the British exists today, so even though it is twenty
years or so dated, it is the best you'll get without going there.

Paul Theroux re-invented the travel guide with his heartwrenchingly honest books such as Riding the Red Rooster and The Great Railway Bazaar . His book My Secret History cemented those two books into a dramatic literary chapter worthy of a Pulitzer.
If you want "meat-and-potatoes" reading, the kind of intellectual meal
that "sticks to your ribs", then pick up one of the above Theroux
books. You'll be changed for life.
