Well, I hit the gunshow. I actually found a few things that were mini bargains. Managed to score some new .300 Savage Winchester brass worth the money. Now to get started loading them up. They had obviously been laying in inventory for a while and I'll have to tumble them a bit before loading. I need to try a new load for these beauties. Maybe I'll try some 150 grain Sierra ProHunter spitzers and something that will turn about 2650 FPS with decent accuracy at 200 yards. Sure can't complain about how IMR4064 has behaved in this rifle though. About anything I've tried gives nice 100 yard groups for hunting and entirely adequate 200 yard hunting groups as well. I guess it would be nice to find a load that would do an honest 2700 FPS with a 150 and shoot nice groups, but in the real world what's 100 FPS mean? Nothing to a deer, that's for sure.AW

I heard that it is hard to reload the .300 Sav because of some weird thing with the next. Is there any truth to this? If there isnt, then i will start loading some up for my dad to feed into his Savage 99. I cant bear to see him load in those Remington Core-Lokts any longer!

The neck on a .300 Savage is a bit short in comparison to other cartridges. But so is the .300 Win. Mag.. Of course the bottom line is that you can get darned decent ammo with little fuss with a set of standard dies most of the time. Just don't size any more than you have to have to chamber smoothly. In some 99's you may end up needing small base dies though. Short necks do tend to beg for cannelured bullets seated to and crimped in the cannelure much like factory ammo, but it's not usually necessary. You just have to try and see what your rifle is going to digest and still behave properly. I really don't think you'll have much trouble getting a load to at least equal the Remington factory CoreLokts though. The old Hornady 150 Spire Point is a darn good place to start as is the IMR4064 powder you already have for your .30/06. It's been easy for me duplicating Remington ballistics and still be running a few grains under book max. That might be just what your dad would want to do. The two loads (both 150's) typically shoot pretty close together at 100 yards so scope adjustment to change loads would be minimal. AW

AW, congratulations on snagging that Winchester brass! I wouldn't mind finding some of that up here. Guess I'll just have to keep making it from 308 brass. I have personally not had any problem with the 300 Savage's short neck when reloading. However, I could see some boattail bullets being a bit sensitive to seating depth in that short a neck, but I don't shoot any of those in the 300 anyway. I have had really good success in my 300 with the 150 HornadyFB, and the 150 Partition loaded with a full case of Nobel #104, which is really close to W760 burning speed. I am going to try the 760 next and see how it performs. A load that also works well and gets superb velocities with the 150 is Vihtavuori N-135. Regards, Eagleye.

I tried some Hornady 150 boat tails but didn't get the groups that the flat bases gave. I'm curious about other powders, but on the other hand, have my doubts about being able to improve much if any over what the 4064 can deliver. Currently I'm figuring on using some 150 Sierra RN's to hunt with this fall. Bench groups were unmeasured but very promising at 100 yards. (Minute of small diamond on a Redfield target) This bullet is also soft enough to behave nicely at speeds well under 2700 FPS according to the techs at Sierra. I'm tempted to try some 150 grain Sierra Spitzers when I fire up the press again just to see if there could possibly be any accuracy differences. AW
