Wooohoooo!!! MY .30-06 dies are on the way! Now all i need is powder. I got some 150 grain partitions for my b-day! What do you guys think for .30-06? I was thinking some Winnie 748. I want an accurate load, not a hyper-velocity magnum load!

"I want an accurate load, not a hyper-velocity magnum load!"
Well NH >> I'd have to say you've got the non "hyper-velocity magnum load" part of the equation covered nicely owning a .30-06. Couldn't resist.
Now we'll just have to see what combination you come up with to satisfy the accuracy part. Good luck to ya. >> klallen

NH - My favourite .30-06 load thus far is 48gr IMR3031 powder behind a 165 grain Remington core-lokt flat base soft point bullet using W-W brass and Win. large rifle primer. I got this load out of the Lyman #47 manual and is listed as a max. load for the 165 grain bullet [their test bullet was a Nosler BTSP].
It is also listed as a "factory duplication load". It is rated for ~ 2800 fps from a 24" barrel. I haven't chronographed it [yet]. However, I've shot it in a Win 70 sporter with 22" barrel, a Win 70 XTR with 24" barrel and a Rem 700 ADL "carbine" with 20" barrel. Will do < 1" in all of those, if I do my part. Also, no pressure signs on the brass or primer, which is good.

Remington 700 ADL .30-06 with Bushnell Trophy 3-9x40mm scope.
I do like Win 748 powder too & have used it with great success in both the 7mm-08 Rem. and .308 Win. I see loads using it for the .30-06 in my manual as well, but since the IMR3031 is working so well in my chosed bullet weight, and I have an 8# keg of it, I'm going to stay with it, I think.
Good luck with your loading. You have chosen a great bullet in the Nosler Partition for your .30-06 loads. Remember, start well under max. and work up slow, checking for those pressure signs! Be careful, but enjoy!
Regards, Marcus.

NH- I have owned and loaded for many 30,06s. The powder to use is IMR-4350 Hands Down it is the powder to use. With any bullet 150 to 180 grain. And you do not have to sacrafice velocity to get accuracy. I highly respect Klallen but his lo opinion of the 30,06 is a charicter flaw I will just have to overlook . My 06 with a 150 grain bullet and IMR-4350 gives 3000, and puts holes in paper vary close together. If my model 70 were a little lighter and easier to carry it would be the one I would allways take with me. Trust me o this it will work !

Well NH_Hunter, you are going to enjoy that '06, for sure! W748 should do fine, but I like 760 better behind the 150 grainer. Somewhere around 59/60 grains gives me cloverleafs and decent velocities, depending on which '06 I'm shooting. As tj already stated, IMR 4350 also works well. Another one I have been working with lately is Vihtavuori N-150, and it shows real promise. The 30-06 is so versatile when it comes to powders, There are probably 20 that will work fine. Now that I have caused some confusion, I'll just bow out! Regards, Eagleye.

Its ok Klallen I now your kiddin, And you know i like mags too ! But I'm not really sure why. I like the STW cause I can take a deer quite abit farther than with the 06, but thinking back on the deer I,v shot over the years , All but 1 I can think of were taken with non magnums, and i can only remember 1 buck that I passesd on (I WAS SHOOTING A 280) that I would have shot with my STW. And the one mulie I took with a 300 win was only about 80 yards.
But the one I passed on was a hell of a buck !

Like Eagleye, I like W760, or H-414. For the past few years I've heard stories and read posts that H-414 and 760, are the same thing. Just like 748 and BLC-2 are the same thing. WMR and H-450 were the same thing (now discontinued). I was talking to one guy who bought a pound of 760 about 10 years ago. The label was falling off, so he pulled it the rest of the way. Lo and behold... he was holding a canister of Hodgdon 414. Anyway, I have used 58.5 gr. of 760 and H-414 for eleven years now behind a 150 Nos BT, with Fed 215M. Again, like Eagleye, tiny little groups at long ranges. This load chrony's 2920 out of my 22" Howa. Great load.

Klallen - Yeah, not to mention the .270 or anything. LOL!
Hey NH - That IMR4350 is a great powder for sure, just like TJ said! I use it in my .300 Win Mag [70 grains behind a 180 gr SP] and it prints!

gotta go along with tj3006 on this one.
55.5 grains of IMR 4350, federal gold match primer, winchester brass and 165 Nosler Partitions or Ballistic Tips have killed about 40 deer for me at ranges of 7 yards to 350 yards. My combo will shoot under 3/4 all day if I do my part.

NH, the 4350 should serve you great. I personally use a Sierra 165 gr HPBT, but whatever you choose, 4350 falls close to the tree.
Not to mention the Rem .280 (7MM express) the 8mm 06, the 9mm 06, the 6mm 06, and others that I could list..........Kingpin

NH,
I have found 4350 of some stripe to be excellent with 165 grain and heavier bullets. With 180's I have dabbled with 4831 of both flavors. I have also tried 760 and 414 with the 150's, and I think if it's speed you want, you'll get it there. When considering 748, 3031, 4895, and 4064 I think all of these have great accuracy potential with 150's. Most of them will strut their stuff in the accuracy department with loads somewhere between 2700 and 2800 FPS. I'm currently loading 150's with 4064 and keeping them pretty mild but still in the 2700 FPS range. Plenty of sauce for deer out to 200 yards or so. Remember the original .30/06 was about 200 FPS short of today's loads, and it established the cartridge's reputation.AW

Ok, now i have my Lyman 45th and 47th's out. In the 45th, one of their accuracy loads was with 52.5 gr of 4064 behind the 150 grain bullet. I think this is a little close to max for me, which is 53. I think i want to go lower just because i am too nervous when it gets close to max. It seems to me like i want to be in the 49-51 grain area. Thanks for all the info guys. Tikka, i am just about to click on that link. It is looking pretty good with the 4064 though.

About the only time IMR4350 doesn't perform well is in semi-autos and with moderate to reduced loads. Faster powders generally behave better in both situations. I think you will find most match ammo loaded with the medium burn rate powders in the 4895 class, and most top end hunting ammo loaded with stuff in the 4350 class. If you want 150 grain bullet loads that will run in the same velocity league as 130 grain .270's, Take a close look at either W760 or H414 ball powders. They WILL turn on the sauce if you really think you need it; and the pressure curves seem noticeably better than with the IMR4350.AW

YEAHH!!!!! I just got back from the gunshop with 1 lb. of IMR 4064, 100 Large Rifle primers, and 1 #3 shell holder. Now all i need is more brass and i am good to go!!! The dies came in today. I am going to load up about 10 with 50 grains and 10 with 51 grains and see where it gets me. For those who dont know, i have 50 150 grain .308 cal Nosler Partitions that i got for my birthday.

NH,
Hold off on those 51.0 grain loads till you see just how the lighter ones are acting. Partitions are prone to being pressure sensitive and causing spikes I hear. Besides, a 48-50 grain charge of 4064 is plenty of load if you can get the accuracy. I'm currently playing with IMR4064 and Hornady 150's in the 48-50 grain charge range in my Eddystone. While I like the mild manners of a 48 grain charge I'm not totally satisfied with the point of impact at 200 yards. I'm trying to get a "battlesight" for that old '17 figured out for one do-all load. I may end up with 165 grain loads when it's all said and done since factory Federal 165's are the closest to the sights of anything tried thus far.AW

I guess i should try the milder ones first. Seeing as this will be my first batch of rifle loads. I have loaded only pistol before. I will be very careful in measuring the charges. 1 at a time. By the way, does anyone have any .30-06 cases that they want to get rid of? That is the one thing i am short on. If this works out with .30-06, then i may start loading up .300 Win Mag for my dad. The the tears will start flowing when i see how much damned powder i have to put in those massive cases . I feel bad for the poor fellows with those .416's and .470 Nitro's

NH,
Are you aquainted with some of the guys over at Ruger's test range? If so, THAT is your source for more once fired brass than you can ever load. I might suggest that you check the bulk bullet dealers for either CoreLokt and Powerpoint 150's. The price will be soooo right in comparison to the Partitions that you are messing with right now. Those Partitions will of course be great for the elk you are planning to whack.AW

I guess i should try talking to Mr. Ruger and see if they do have any cases that i could get. They use super high pressure Federal loads. So I dont know how many times they will last.

NH,
The proof loads might be a bit rough on the brass, But if they are free and you only get two or three loads before you retire them, then it's still a real deal. I'd say they probably shoot more than a little standard pressure stuff over there too.AW

I will make sure and inquire about them. We also have about 100 factory Remington 150 and 180 grain core-lokts that i would shoot just to get the brass. I will make sure to order some brass anyways. I may also order some Hornady SST's in a little bit, just to see how they shoot, or just use Hornady flat bases. They should do just fine on elk, seeing as the elk are large at 400 lbs.

NH I have not herd much good about the SSTs but I have not shot them my self, The flat base hornady is a good bullet. But I would go with a 165 for those little Elk. But if you 150 grain partitions shoot well they will work fine too !
