sluggo, I saw the rifle after it was built. It was nice, but I don't think I'd go $3795 for it. If you really want one, I can buld you one of the same quality for about half, less if you buy the rifle. The base rifle should be around $600-$700, depending where you buy it. The "magic" isn't much more..........Kingpin

Hey fellas!

Well, I wouldn't buy something like that unless I won the lottery but it is unusual and nice.

Korey:  Nope, never saw that sorta thing at WalMart!

Kingpin:  Well, I'll keep that in mind.  As soon as I get down to Florida (moving in two short weeks!) I am planning on joining one of the approved shooting clubs and going through the hoops so I can get one of the CMP Garands while they still have some.  I guess they start at $500.  I also have a lead on a Winchester M1 that has the original barrel.  I really don't want that pretty stock and all, but I would be interested in having a custom M1.  I have one of the new production Springfield Inc. Garands which is nice, but it's not the same thing, ya know?

Y'all take care now.

Hey guys,

Have you all seen the garands that have been rechambered and modified to fire the .338 and .458 Winchester magnums? Can't remember much from the article except that they were weird looking and had a three shot mag.

Kingpin, how hard would this be to do and would they be reliable?

NOFX, I can build a Garand in about two hours, if I have all the parts. Lugging the reciever takes a little more time and then there's the glass work. If I have ALL the parts, I could build a good running rifle in a little over a week. That would include making the stock look like a custom finish was applied. When I say "all the parts" what I mean is, if I am given a complete rifle to work on. I would have to order things like a NM op rod and a new barrel, but I know where to get all that stuff, so a two week turn around wouldn't be unrealistic with everything on hand. I would also install a NM aperture on the rear sight and a NM front blade. I woild also do a trigger job. The cost varies with the amount of work that you want.....Kingpin

I don't know diddly about Garands but I would think a presentation type gun would have nice wood. Thats just plain walnut with a high gloss finish.

Not entirely Rob. I have built them into match rifles too. In your reguards, I would consider a glossy finish if that's what you wanted and would do it. Most real rifles that I am acquainted with, look good and shoot good. They usually don't leave here unless they are both, or what the customers demand. PM me and I will deal a great Garand with you, no kidding. After all, we are, almost, cut from the same tree....LOL...........Kingpin

Hey Rob:

The stock is not what I expected either for a National Match presentation rig.  I'm no expert on M1s, but I was unaware that Rock Island Armory had anything to do with actual rifle production after WW I.  I know the government sold all of Rock Island's 1903 Springfield machinery and tooling to Remington.  Maybe they did make parts for the Garands that Springfield Armory made; I don't know.

I have seen photos of a Garand that was presented to John Garand and it had a beautiful stock with lots of those stripes in it like tiger maple has (fiddleback??)

The guy's at Cabela's say this is the real deal though and not a fake and I'm sure they will sell it.  To be honest, I'd rather buy four minty 1903s for that much money.

Kingpin,

How I would love for you to build me a garand but alas thanks to Australia's new gun laws All semi autos are out I'm afraid. Even though I am a law abiding christian the second I touch a semi auto I will turn into a rabid maniac and kill everyone in sight..... according to the government....

NOFX, here, they are trying to do the same thing, calling Magazines, "ammunition feeding devices" and limiting them to 10 rounds in post ban rifles and handguns. The truth is, when you shoot one round, it feels good. Two rounds, it feels a little better. Anything after a three round string, and you want to go to a schoolyard for target practice. We can thank the almighty that the powers that were, limited magazine capacity to 10 rounds. If you believe that, I want to sell you beachfront property in Colorado. Polititions are like diapers, always full of shit and stuck on your ass. If you ever decide to move to the US, steer clear of Kalifornia and New York first, and I can build you a great rifle. If you move to Kalifornia, a requisite is, that you are brain dead and have friends named, "Muffy, Biff, Tad, and Jody" and have to have sex in a hottub If you move to New York, it is a state requirement that you like to be spoon fed shit. Almost anyplace else, you may own what you want except for machineguns, but if you want to own one, it is legal and will be a federal matter...............Kingpin

Hey kingpin,

Think about this one then answer - (i can't figure a way out of it)

I would like an very accurate semi-auto that I can use for both varmint and competition.  I want enough power out to 400yds to drop a yote with conviction.  Would you go 233, or 243?  then which rifle would you choose.

I'm thinking lighter recoil = easier tracking on running shots, less flinching and cheaper shooting.  Maybe I'm lookin for the wrong class of gun, I like the idea of throwin lead fast sometimes.  I like 223's for close work in woody area's, but the western kansas running yotes are a stretch, then again I can always back it up with the 300wsm.

Spot, if it were me, I would go with an M1A converted to NM. The AR-15 is good too. It may interest you to know that they are using the AR-15 in thousand yard competition. I build both of the mentioned rifles. The AR isn't too hard to build, because almost everything made for them doesn't need to be fit likeit does in the M1A. I am a thirty caliber shooter, and the M1A is the smallest centerfire rifle that I have, unless you count the AR-15, which I don't use much any more except for home defense......Kingpin

Kingpin,

This would be a toy / varmint gun when I get one, most likely end up being a AR.  Kind of stuck in this cartridge selection issue, 243 is a toughy and drops then where they are.  223 is OK but some think it's too light, heck I've seen guy's use 22 mag under 100yds and it works alright.  We had a squabble goin on over at shooters about it, and quiet a few thought the 223 was too under power'd.

I'll keep thinking about it, but I'm trying to avoid to many gun's.  Right now I have the 300 wizzzum, and 358 win for close and long shoots.  I want to shoot competition again so I'll end up getting a black gun (mouse gun) fer accross the course.  Question is do I get a second on fer over 300 yd work, use to have a remy 788 223, 22-250, and a ruger 25-06, 30-06, and 300Win.  Don't want that many again.  Black gun fer under 300, probably savage or sako bolt 22-250, or 243 for over 300 is the way I'll go (bolt of course).  I think I'd get better barrel life out of a 243, than I would a 22-250?  Maybe not pretty much the same powder charge.  And yes, I've been know to shoot enough to burn out a barrel - most folks don't get anywhere near over 2000 rouds, I can get up to 5k if I'm really shooting.

BTW - If all goes well my membership on the NRA range here (300yds) should start Oct 1st given all the paper work goes through.  My wife has NO IDEA of what's coming... hehehehe (GRIN)  I've already got 400 test rounds loaded up, and gettin ready to load hundreds of 223 I got from mr M - I'm nearly done with case prep on the first 500.
