I was wonderin' if anybody else has my delimma, and how they might have addressed the problem. See, my eyes ain't so good up close no more. They ain't so good at front sight distance niether, when I'm shootin' my 45s. I'm thinking of getting some shooting glasses with a prescription specific to that distance. Some 1.25 readers actually works pretty good, any more powerful, and the target goes blurry. Trifocals seem troublesome. I don't think I'd like bobbing my head around to get the right lens, but maybe y'all don't find it so irriating. Anyhoo, I was jus' wonderin' how other over the hill range rats handle this situation.

there are safety glasses available in prescriptrions... my eyes aren't quite as bad as what you are making yours out to be, but you probably want a prescription that will make the front sight crystal clear, even if it makes the target really fuzzy. no help beyond that from me, though... |

Your right about stonger power. As your sights get cleared, the target gets fuzzier. One thing you can do to help is as follows: Go to any eye glass store and buy one of the plastic covers that fit over a eye glass lens.It must be at least opaque or so you can't see though it. I think they are called oclutors(sp) . It covers the whole lens on just one eye. and clips onto the top of the frame. Take a regular set of shooting glasses , or safety glasses, anything that it will fit and fits you. You could even do it with the 1.25's Put the glasses on and have someone mark a small spot on them about 1/16 " or less , in the exact location as the center of your pupil with magic marker. Put the plastic cover on and transfer that mark to the cover. At that location, drill a 1/16" hole through it and check if it is cented on your pupil. Try it out to see if you can see through that hole. Adjust the location on the frame to make it right. Move up about 3/16" or so, and then cut a 1/4" square hole through the cover. You will have 3/16" between the edge of the hole and the bottom of the 3/16" square you cut out. When shooting, look though the 3/16" sqaure for target acquisition by tilting your head down alittle. Then use the 1/16" hole for sight to target aquisition. If the 1/4 inch isn't big enough, open it up, but keep the 3/16" dimension between the bottom of the square and the 1/16" hole You will find that this really sharpens the sight picture. As you age and your eyes get worse though, nothing will help a great deal. Edited by saddlesore |

I went to aperture sights on my hunting rifle, with an adjustable Merit Corp. aperture. Helped immensely, on focusing on the front sight. Could also just go to a trade gun, with no rear sight.

Fair enuff. I didn't actually specify what kind of .45 I was talkin' 'bout, did I. Personally, I like a .54 muzzleloader. Then the sights don't matter at all. The noise alone has been knowed to knock a buck deer right off his hooves, enabling me to run up and hit him betwixt the eyes with my metal buttplate.

Mule, I had a pair of glasses made for me at my optomitrist (sp). When I told them what I needed them set up for (iron sights) they thought I was out where the busses don't run. I had them fit to the sight radius of my rifle...............Kingpin
