Okay, with the Kingpin AR having a barrel with a twist of 1:7, I decided to run heavy bullets in it. I have a box of .224 75 grain Hornady A-Max's, box o' 77 grain SMKs, and a box of Nosler Custom Competetion 77 grainers. I have my dies (RCBS small base) but now need to figure out powder. I was thinking along the lines of BLC-2 and Varget. There is a thread lower down this page about powders for .223, but it seemed directed more towards 40-50 grain bullets. I can buy IMR powders right in town, so if there are any that are good for heavy .223 then I am all for them. Closest place I can get Hodgdon is an hour long drive.

Why the heavy bullet craze?  J. jumpin' Keerist on a pogo stick, if you want to shoot 75 grain bullets, get a .243 or, better yet, a 6mm Remington.  Use the AR platform in the way it was designed to be used, 50-something grain bullets in the low to mid three thousand's.  If you're not going to start shooting at Camp Perry, there's no need to go through the money it's gonna take to do that trick.

Hey NH  >>  I'm using BL-C(2) in my .223 with the 75 gr. A-Max's.  Hornady prints 2700 fps from the 20" barrel on the AR they used for testing.  The 26" barrel on my Savage 12FV offers considerably more.  Good luck with development.  >>  klallen

i've heard lots of good about tac, but haven't tried it myself yet. my kp-15 runs varget.
Hunting is not a matter of life or death; it is much more important than that.

I have always used Varget when using the heavier bullet for the 223 Rem including the 75 grain AMAX with excellent results.Varget it hard to beat.
