I made my absolute best shot EVER with a handgun last weekend. From leather, I drew and shot as fast as I could with one follow up shot (double tap).  Range was 25 yds.  Target was an NRA 25 yd. slow fire target.  I know, it should have been a sillouette, but I was just horsing around after doing some bullseye practice.

So, using the front sight only, much to my surprise I saw the first shot hit the 10 ring, a little high off-center.  The second shot was about 2.5" off to the 11 o'clock.  At 25 yds, that's a pretty good self defense group for less than 2 seconds, but to have one hit the ten ring, is just more than I can handle.

I'll never replicate that first shot in a life time.  No where to go but downhill, I guess.  Maybe we could start a thread with best shots ever with a handgun, hunting rifle, etc.

Practice, practice, practice. If you tell yourself you can't do it, you won't. Being a marksman has nothing to do with what you used to do, it is what you can do when you are called to do it......................Kingpin

I probably practice more than most, since there ain't nothin' else to do in these parts.  With most things - guitar, ping pong, sex - a person will improve to the capacity of his innate talent, then stagnate at that level regardless of effort.  Kind of a diminishing return sort of deal.

Mule, That's not true at all. A person will most often improve to the level that he cares about reaching or is forced to reach. Most of the time it's a matter of how much time you have to divide among various pursuits. If you find one that you care about more than another you are fairly good at you'll never progress at the one you are fairly good at. Some people are either so distracted, bored or whatever that they try to do everything. Probably with some degree of success but mostly to the tune of "jack of all trades, master of none. Any practice you do with something you truly care about will pay rewards of some improvement. That's not saying we can all be Kim Rhodes or Doug Koenig but we all can improve if we care enough to practice. RD

That gets me to thinking.

I am a big boxing fan. If you look at the top fighters in all weight classes they almost all started when they were about 5 years old. I would be willing to bet it is the same with alot of other sports. That tells me that since these people started so young, they probably practiced more than the average guy.

Just a thought.

Your point may be valid only as long as I can see the front sight.  It's getting harder all the time.

Ready to go Rob.  Just send me $500 and it will be on it's way in a jiffy.  Please make it a cashier's check or better yet, send it to my Paypal account.  You won't find a better deal than that.

DEAL!  Deliver to my home and stack on porch.  Rifle will be sent via train upon verification that wood comes from real bufflers.

I saw one today. In good shape but I'm quite sure the action and barrel were reblued. Price, $2450.  That'd probably be two loads of Buffler wood

Wow!  No rifle is worth that.  I don't care if Teddy R. used it in Africa.  Not even a fabled M71.  Hate to hijack things, but I saw one of those new M70 Classics at the gun show.  I'd like to take one apart and see if they're really built like they look.

I haven't laid eyes on the new winchester yet. I should have looked today. I was in to pick up a old Husqvarna FN 98. Nice action on it for a $350 when all the shipping and ffls fees added in.

$2450 is a lot but a lot of guys will put that in a low level custom rifle. I imagine pistols can get up there too. I'm looking for a good shooter condition 71. Maybe some old lady will have one at a garage sale or I'll hit the powerball.

I guess you're right about pistols.  I've got two or three with that or more in them.  I guess you have to pick your poison.  I have to tell you though, a .348 is not a pleasant rifle to shoot much.  The metal buttplate and the kick of the tapered case don't make for good shooting.  You can load them down, with cast bullets and such, but it's not going to be a plinker, by any stretch.

Tapered cases kick more than others? By what method was this deduced? RD

I know, Jay.  However, with my aging eyes, it's a place I get to less and less these days.  I bought trifocals, hoping to be able to tilt my head a little and have a strong focus on the front sight.  Can't shoot that way.  I lean into my stance with a slight hunch.  Tilting my head bacwards throws everything off and I shoot terrible that way.  Better to let the sight go blur and keep fighting to concentrate on that blur rather than the target, which I can get into focus.  You might say fighting with my own brain gives the best results.  But then, you knew that about me.
