got the desert eagle out for the first time today. it ran well, and actually is a handfull from the bench, which surprised me quite a bit. so i tested out some 300 and some 325 grain ammo for it, and both of them are shooting way high. i couldn't even find paper at 100 yards. at 50 yards, it is running about 8" high. the gun is fixed sights... i have a couple of options here, and want some input. option 1, replace the front sight w/ something a lot taller (how much taller? dunno, and is why i am asking for a math genius). option 2, put an adjustable rear sight on (and will still probably need a taller front... again, how much taller?). option 3, file the rear sight down... this one concerns me a bit, but may be the easiest fix. i am not interested in scoping the gun at this time. i am, however, interested in hitting targets w/ the gun. thoughts? |

Dak; What caliber? Does it have a dovetail cut into the slide for the front sight? I'm not real familiar with the Deagles, so therefore the question about the slide. 900F |

I believe it is a straight ratio equation so here it goes: Distance to target in inches = Distance between front/rear sights Height you want to move at range “X” the change in front sight (up or down) So, X=desired movement of sight * sight radius/ distance to target in inches Example: on a 6 inch sight radius, each inch bullet movement at 50 yards equals X (1” * 6 “) / 50 yards * 36 inches per yard = X = 6/1800 = 1/300 = .0033 per inch of bullet desired movement. If you want to move the bullet down 10 inches at 50 yards then the front sight would need to increase .033 inches.
sorry this format is tough on equations. If you let me know the distance between your front and rear sight I can do the math.

Dak, I had an oppertunity to shoot a DE 50 with 325 factory loads a few yrs ago. It was brand new and the owner was letting any/all shooters at the range shoot it to "loosen it up" - It shot to a different POA for each and every shooter. Think the recoil was so viscious that depending on the hold it shot different for the different shooters. |

sight radius is 8.5". called magnum research today about the problem and they were useless. their best answer was to buy some adjustable sights for it. really pissed me off, and i let them know i felt that was unacceptable. didn't sway 'em much. |

At 50 yards, it is running about 8" high, with an 8.5” sight radius. X=desired movement of sight * sight radius/ distance to target in inches X= 8 * 8.5/1800 = .038 inches increase. But you should try to give yourself some extra adjustments I’d do at least a .05 increase. Remember you can decrease the rear the same amount to get it right on. With the dovetails you can pretty easily get a new front sight (Brownell’s) or ask the manufacture. I had a SS S & W I bought to give to my kid fro his 16th birthday, a beautiful gun. It was way off and was on a large frame but had $hit sights. I sent it back to Smith and they put a new orange insert sight of the correct height on it and set the trigger to a nice 2.5 # FREE. |

A trick I've used is to build up the front sight with that two color epoxy putty. Since Bear gave you a height you can go right to that. I always just did a small amount and kept adding/testing as needed. Once I got it right I measured what I had and went out looking for the proper height front sight. Sometimes you have to get a taller one and file it down but at least you know how much to take off. The putty is much cheaper than buying and wrecking front sights. DD |

I was thinking liquid steel, about three bucks a tube, same idea colored epoxy would be easier to see though. You might even be able to epoxy a fiber optic tube on there. RC |

You can also file a small dovetail into the front sight for the epoxy to get a "Hold" on aka purchase. The red epoxy files and sands well, but use 600 grit on the last sanding to get rid of any deep scratches that "glow" in sunlight. I also test fire it frequently, as you can't put material back.
