In past years I've taken:
Marlin 39, 22LR 10-22 Ruger 22LR and a Rem 22 lr pump. Fire power seemed to be an importany factor. I seem to remember going thru a brick of 22LR with Jason firing at gophers running about 300 -400 yards out in a 30-40 pmh cross wind, downhill. Besides adding 4 kids since then, I've got a heavy barreled CZ 455 bolt action Evolution in 17HMR. Any one shooting 17 HMR at MYGAWDS? too much? too slow? |

I did a few years back, no one objected to it.
It got stolen so I'm back to the 10/22

It's good to see you ABear
I have used my 10-22 every time I have been to MYGAWDS. I seem to go through quite a bit of ammo. Not as much as deaddog, but quite a bit. Sometimes if they are out more than 100 yards it might take a few shots to "walk it in". I bring lots of ammo and a semi auto. That being said, I think a 17 might just reach out there and get one shot kills. depending on the wind. Wing master

Hope to see everyone April 26-30! In addition to the CZ 453, I have lucked into a Ruger 10/22 with the walnut manlicher full stock in stainless steel that I'm anxious to get blooded, so I'll stick with the .22 long rifle. Everything from 17 to 223 have been used on our hunts, not sure if Garou unleashed the exotic big 7 that he has, but I've considered bringing my 50-90 out just to say I've done it. The only heat Jim and I took was one of our group getting too close to a house with a 17, we went out and visited with the landowner and got it all straightened out. Way too loud was the complaint. Great to see everyone getting worked up for this hunt! Tom

Tom, do you think the big 50 is adequate?
What rifle is the 50-90? would love to see it.

Bear, the 50-90 is a black powder cartridge rifle that I've had for sometime, a C. Sharps offering as I've done quite a bit of stock work for the company over the years. 600 grain lead cast by Montana Bullet Works in Bonner near Missoula with 90 grains of Fg Goex. Like hurling a brick at something. Trajectory is a real danger to low flying crop planes.

I've used the go-to 10/22, 17HMR, .223, 6mmRem, and, yes, the exotic 7mmPM at MYGAWDS. The 10/22 is my preferred tool. I generally go through a traditional 500rd brick of Winchester SuperX 40gr. Jacketed Power Points. The 17 is a bit loud, but extends the range by 100 yards or so. Windage is always an issue with the rimfire cartridges.

Thanks for the CB dinner date Garu. I really want to attend that function.
Still can't say 100 % on making it. Work will be the problem and I will not know till late this month. But I have decided to pack the CZ Evolution (blue laminate stock) 17 HMR for the gophers.
