following the instructions found here:

http://www.randyq.addr.com/ecb/ecbmods.html

i've begun modifications on my ECB.

i've drilled a row of holes appx 2 inches wide across the bottom and a triangular pattern about the size of a tennisball into the lid. i'll get the materials to do the rest of the mods this week sometime, but for today's chicken smoke, this should be good.

the holes are smaller than i want them to be due to availibility of drill bits at the moment. hopefully i left room to make bigger holes later on down the road.

progress reports to follow as they happen.

i got my "mod" instructions from this site:

http://www.randyq.addr.com/ecb/ecbmods.html

as you can see, he drills his in a line so that he can rig a pretty good airflow control system. i drilled mine the same way, but did not install the swinging plate as i have found no need for it...yet.

i did the same mods to all three of my ECBbs as i found them to work well.

as for firebuild, i am still learning, but it looks like this:

i then dump a chimmney-full of lump or briquettes (depending on availability) on that, trying to maintain some open space in a line down the middle on the same track as the hole in the pan. i then either put chunks (not soaked) of chips in a foil pouch with a very small hole (soaked) on the coals and sit back and enjoy the BBQ. when the foil pack SEEMS done, open it up all the way and you will have quite a few minutes of extra smoke there.

like i said, i am still learning a lot about temp control and the fire - you can read some of my revalations here:

Well, now I know what an ECB is.

I have an even cheaper Smoker.  It is a $200 Charbroil smoker, electric with an green enamel metal housing.  My S-I-L I paid $1 for it at a garage  sale, and gifted it to me.

I'll have to read the mods to see if I need them.  today I'm making a blanket out of some thin I-O carper to encircle the unit so I get more heat retention.  I us to use the original Luhr Jensen box on my other unit.

1.1.1.                 Big Green Egg Smokers

From their web site at: http://www.BigGreenEgg.com

The rebirth of the ancient oriental Kamado cooker. The idea is 3000 years old but The Big Green Egg is NOW! The perfect smoker AND grill AND barbecue. Meats, fish, veggies, pizza--all done to perfection.

Our ceramics experts have created what some call "The Ultimate Smoker"--a beautiful and practical marriage of time proven cooking methods and modern technology.  Suggested list prices are $99 to $459 for the mini through the large smokers.

[Review--Many List members report a high degree of satisfaction with the Big Green Egg smokers.]

if this is what you're talking about, not sure if or what modifications can be done.

if it is the same smoker, let me know and i can ask - --

Not mine.  that one uses charcoil.  I have and electric element in the bottom and wood chip pan that is electrically heated.

Sort of like the Luhr Jensen "little chief" but three times as big.

chances are you will find what you are looking for here:

http://www.eaglequest.com/~bbq/faq2-w97.zip

this is a SAFE zip file for the BBQFAQ, a word document that goes through most of the najor smokers and mods - also has quite a bit on techniques, recipes, methods etc. very, very helpful load of Q&A!
