Hey guy's,

This is my first time here and it looks cool!

I fitted a mercury recoil reducer to my CZ 550 .458 Win mag and gotta say can't really notice the differance. It still kicks like a S.O.B but I managed to shoot a 3 shot group that measured 1.4 inches - which I was stoked with. So maybe recoil was lower? It didn't kick back into my face this time, so that was good!

Recoil is a funny thing.I can see both sides of it the way Klallen and Kingpin have argued it.I personally don't find recoil a problem in most rifles up to the 375 H and H,which I find very comfortable.A 378 weatherby kicks.I think when you are varmiting long range and want to see the fall of your shot a muzzlebrake may be of use(espeacially if you are putting through 50 to 100 rounds through a RUM or similar rig)My 30-378 has a factory one fitted. I have fired it without and the recoil is tolerable. My own answer to recoil is in stock design and weapon weight.I very seldom shoot sporter rifles.I like 10 -15 lbs even when I hunt the mountains.Weight is not an issue with me.I keep fit.As for mercury recoil reducers, don't really know.I'd rather but another 2 inches on my rifle barrel I think.Have a good one macca.

LOL, well, first things first. I don't golf, I have never golfed, and I have no desire to start golfing. I don't know anything about golf carts and wouldn't know what to do with one if someone gave me one, maybe use it to haul horseshit to the garden. As far as golf goes, I don't know anything about the game or give a fat rats ass about it. The closest I have ever been to golfing is when I scroll through it when looking for NASCAR. Robin Williams once said that "Golf is a white mans chance to dress like a pimp." I think I have said plenty about golf.

Muzzle brakes: I know about them, they work, look like hell on a rifle, resembling a poly-choke on a shotgun. I have installed more brakes than I care to comment on and whether you believe it or not, the best job of putting a brake on, still looks like hell. Brakes do reduce felt recoil. Brakes are a hell of a lot louder than a standard rifle in the same caliber, and for all these negative reasons, I usually try to talk a customer out of the installation (which I charge $100 to do, plus the price of the brake of their choice.) I have also machined them on the end of the barrel that I installed. It's a lot cleaner, somewhat pricier, and just as noisy. Never let it be said that I would stand in the way of someone wanting to make a lot of noise. Macca smacked it right on the head when he said stock design and rifle weight are usually ideal things to cut the recoil back some. As far as my telling anyone NOT to have the thread of their barrel and screwing on one of these ridiculous, it never happened, I just made a recommendation.

Mercury recoil reducers: I have installed these too. I have never put one on a really big bore rifle though. No one ever asked me to do it, and I don't know how long they will last before separating and leaking all that mercury (a heavy metal that you shouldn't eat, even by accident.) I have installed them in a lot more shotguns than rifles. Trap and skeet shooters use a lot of them, with none that I have ever heard of, coming apart. They might, but I never heard of one.

Varmint shooting: The range was determined by using a Leica LASER range finder that I was working with one day. I made the shot in Mississippi in a freshly planted cotton field. I used my McMillan .50 BMG with a Lilja Barrel, a 16X Leupold MK4 scope with Mil Dot reticles and Hornady AMAX match ammo. I dialed the range on my knobs and shot the 'yote, point of aim-point of impact. It almost tore him in half. The range was actually 1427 yds, and wasn't that difficult of a shot as long as you have the proper equipment. I was shooting off a bench with sandbags. One guy was so impressed, that, he had a special T-Shirt silk screened for me, so, I have been there, seen that, done that, and got a T-shirt for it........Kingpin

G'day macca and everyone else for that matter!

I live in Geelong Victoria which is a cool place coz Melbourne is only 40-45 min away in one direction and in the other direction we've got the surfcoast ( Bells Beach, Winki pop, Torquay etc..).

There is not much in the way of hunting down here, foxes and a few rabbits but in the right place there is Sambar and I am looking forward to having a crack at them.

I know a few people on this board from shooters.com and it looks like a real friendly place and I look forward to having a good old yarn with you guys in the future.

NOFX, in the dust and smoke I totally missed you. Allow me to extend a handshake to you (or laurel and hardy handshake as in Blazing Saddles.) Also, what Tash said about help on the computer is'nt exactly true, I know lees about them than your average 3 year old, so please don't ask me about computers. On the other hand I will be glad to help you with any gun problem that you have. I went to Austrailia for two weeks on Uncle Sam's ticket for some R&R. Maybe you can help me, what legalities would be involved with my importing a couple of Dingo pups. They sure are neat dogs.........Kingpin

G'day Kingpin and thanks for the welcome!

I hope you enjoyed you stay in Oz, it sure is an awesome place isn't it? Give me a couple of days and I'll ask some people about the dingo pups.As a matter of fact they are getting quite popular over here as a pet. I personally am a Doberman man and am breeding at the moment but Dingo's are near the top of my favorite list. Real good hard working dog.

I will certainly take you up on your offer to ask questions as there is just so much to learn isn't there?

Russ.
