guys - a member has requested help, not for himself, but for his son (who is returning for this third tour) and his son's squad, part of wisconsin's red arrow brigade:

Originally posted by Irish Bird Dog Irish Bird Dog wrote:

during his last tour my son said the magazines issued for the M9 were really bad (not reliable) and after market.....not even Beretta factory.......so.......

Do any of you know of a quality brand magazine for the Beretta 92 as issued by the military?

Would we (the BSB's) be able to generate some interest in getting enough quality M9 9mm magazines for his squad?  At least one quality magazine for each of their M9's???

They would run about $17-20 each I'd guess.  We'd be looking at somewhere in the $300+ range I'd guess to purchase 14 of them.

My son is a squad leader & he has 13 soldiers in his squad and they all carry the M9 along with their M4's & the Ma Duce in the gun turret of their humvees.

Thank you for your consideration of my request.

Irish Bird Dog

P.S.  FYI.....My optomitrist donated a years supply of lens cleaning solution and lens cloths to these guys.  They all have to wear glasses for safety as well as goggles and they all have optics on their M4's that require cleaning frequently.  She did this for his last two tours also.  A great lady!

alright, guys, first thing we need to know is where we can get the best price on some very good magazines. i know nothing about M9s but i know several of you have some good knowledge here. let's see what we can find out.

as for raising some cash, it looks like going off an estimate of 20$/mag, we're looking at 280$ plus another 20$ for shipping, for a total of 300$. if only 15 of us were to kick in 20$, we could accomplish this easily - 30 of us could kick in 10$ and spread the joy around even more. maybe for an order of 14 mags we could even get a bulk discount or something?

if anyone can or would like to take point on this, sing out here. if needed, we can do it like we did TimberGhozt's binocs and other equipment or if someone can think of a better way please post it. RockyDog, you're in wisconsin, perhaps you could lend a hand with this as far as coordination or collecting the money? if so, that's great - if not, no big deal.

it is 21MAR2009, let's see if we can get them shipped by early may and show wisconsin's finest red arrow brigade what can be done. as many of you know, bkcorris was also from wisconsin, and i propose that this show of support be made in his memory as i know he would have been very enthusiastic about this.

that is all for now -

i have a couple berettas and am having a tough time finding reputable mags for 'em myself...

Fella's;

I don't know about the one's CDNN has, but the Mec-Gar's have been suggested to me.  I have no personal experience with them, does anybody else here?

I'm in whatever we get.

My experience is that after market magazines often do not work properly.  Some times the gun show models just don't even fit.

The squad is having problems with his issue ones (not mfgs); so if we are going to do it, and ship them half way round the world...lets get mfg standard make.  This would most likely assure they will work there.

I might want a cheaper secondary market clip for the range, but for combat  only the best is adequate.

The one I was looking at was claimed to be Mil spec and Mil contract. I don't have a 92 but if someone does maybe they should buy one to confirm the quality? Just for argument's sake who do you claim as the mfg. of M-16's and thier corresponding mags? As far as I know Mag Pull doesn't make a M-16 but everyone want's their mags.

Fellas, IBD here...........I am humbled by the response to my request for my son and his soldiers........thank you!..

I have read the posts and found the info below in reference to Mec-Gar someone made.  the following is pasted from Mec-Gar's website:

prominent firearm manufacturers for the last 40 years. The following are a few of the firearm
manufacuturers to whom Mec-Gar has supplied magazines to throughout our history:

AMT    Armscor    Astra    Beretta    Bernadelli    FN Browning    BUL     Charles Daly
Colt     CZ    Girsan    IMI    Kel-Tec    Kimber    Llama    North American Arms    Remington
Ruger    Sarsilmaz    Sigarms    Smith & Wesson    Springfield Armory    STI    Standard Arms
Star    Steyr    Tanfoglio    Taurus    Tisas    Walther

BERETTA 92FS 9mm 15rd
Military Style Manganese-Phosphated Finish

MGPB9215P - Phosphated

$30.10 each

I started another reply but lost it when I went to get this info (above) from the Mec-Gar site.  Just some info to check out.  Kingpin......Brownells may be a good source of magazines.......let me know if you want me to check with them.

I am for sure IN....and let me know if you want me to do anything.

A brief history of the Red Arrow soldiers from WI:  The 2nd Battalion, 127th IBCT spent a year in Iraq in 2005-2006.  They were assigned the mission to protect supply convoys throughout all of Iraq from a base in Kuwait.  They did this by driving 5.7 MILLION miles in 12 months.  They never lost a convoy but did loose 3 soldiers and and some wounded.

If you go to www.wisconsinhistory.org you can find a book called PRIVATE SOLDIER A Year In Iraq with a WISCONSIN NATIONAL GUARD UNIT.  The book was written by one of their soldiers and the pictures were taken by two of their soldiers.

Thank You..........All

How about the new Mitchell mags? I believe they hold 20 rounds and from what I hear the are supposed to be tops....but no telling as to where to get them.

IBD, I have a brother in law (light bird) in the army (logistics, two tours in Iraq) whom I will ask and get back to you.

I have no problem donating to the cause.

IBD, not to be disrespectful but are your son's troops cleaning their mags when they service their weapons? Talking to some other buddies they said that in most cases folks loaded up the 9mm mag and then left the rounds there for a long period of time.  Over time the spring and interior of the mag gets very dirty (they are, as you know, in a damn dust bowl) and the spring catches on the grit buildup – thus the mag does not work properly.  There is no substitute for routine maintenance on the magazine – complete disassembly, cleaning and light oiling.

By the way, the inlaw is going to be out of pocket for awhile so I won't have a chance to talk to him until next month.

I noticed that when Digger was packing his bags for the dessert last month he had aftermarket mags for the M9. Didn't give it much thought till now. I might just have to find some good factory mags and send them to Digger too.

Monies tight right now, but I can always find a few bucks to help these soliers out. So count me in when someone gets them found.

guys - it looks like we've got a great base for support and i am confident that we can pull this off.

since i know zilch about M9s or their magazines, i would be appreciative if someone could step up and take point on the coordination of this effort. this would include research into the mags, collecting the money, making the purchase and coordinating shipping to the red arrows.

i will assist that person in any way needed and i am sure other members will also assist if asked.

thanks ~

I have not dealt with the M9 and don't understand why issue magazine have a low reliability rate. When I carried the 1911 in the service I had to clean my mags regularly and when not being carried I took a couple of rounds out to not strain the spring.

Generally a bad spring is the source of problem with magazines. Many of the after market mags such as Mec Gar are not that good. Others I have seen for my different semi auto pistols have not been of good quality. Right now I have a FN Hi Power magazine that doesn't fit properly and it is a factory mag.

This are problems no matter which war and which pistols are in service. If I could, I would see if you can get one of the mags and check the spring in it, compare it to a mag from a Berretta 92 at some gun store, the mag that comes with the pistol. That comparison can tell you a great deal.

Jerry
