I'm moving to Sault Ste Marie in the spring.  Who here has done any hiking, camping, kayaking, fishing or hunting in the UP?  What is the forest like, is it mostly pine and fir or deciduous?  I've been able to dig up info on a shooting range there and some surfing but not much about the national forests and the state parks.  I also broke out the Cabelas catalog since 12 years in the northwest has left me unprepared for below zero temps.  I'm really looking forward to cross country skiing again and winter camping.

I was in Charlevoix and Marquette this past week. The colors of the hard woods went on for hundreds of miles so I'd say less than half are pines. Looks like you could get lost pretty easy up there. The people that live in the U.P. Really love it. The ones that don't leave. I don't know why but many people up there don't like S.S.M. And have derogetory terms for it but I don't know why? The wind off the lakes is bitter cold and be ready for 300" of snow per year. I like it but could never get the wife to live in a place like that.

Endeavor to persevere.

I'm in the Coast Guard and being transferred there.  I like cold and snow and small towns.  After 12 years of Washington, Oregon and northern California I have really grown to love pine and firs so I am going to miss that.  I won't miss not seeing the sun for weeks at a time in winter though.
