I would like some first hand experience based comments on the Rossi set up shown here...or the same as one or two bbl sets...primarily interested in the shotgun bbl part.....no opinions wanted or needed on the product unless based on experience, just practical experience info.....unless you can offer another alternative...the idea is to have a .410 to start shooting with (11yr old grandson of small stature) and move to the 20ga when ready for more recoil.....switch bbl seems a reasonable way to start.....I only have two Rossi guns....M92 .38 Spl/.357 Mag carbine from late 1980's & early 1990's M85 .38 Spl+P....both reliable....no other basis to judge Rossi products with.

Rossi Introduces the Pick 4 Youth Gun

MIAMI - Rossi's new Pick 4 offers the four best-selling calibers of the Rossi youth line in one complete shooting system. The Pick 4 includes a .22LR with adjustable fiber optic front sight, .243 with fixed fiber optic front sight and 20 gauge and .410 shotgun barrels, both with brass bead front sights.

Utilizing a break-open design, each barrel can be replaced in minutes. The system is offered in a blued finish with a black synthetic stock or hi-def green camo stock. The Pick 4 features a scope mount base, hammer extension and removable cheekpiece that allows the gun to be adjusted for proper fit with its various barrels. The system also comes standard with a custom carrying case, dual-purpose strap and four safety features, including the Taurus Security SystemŽ.

The Pick 4 barrels measure from 18.5 inches to 22 inches with an overall length of 31.5 inches to 35 inches, depending upon which barrel is installed. The gun weighs 7.8 pounds.

Have you ever shot a rossi with a shotgun barrel?

My boy got one with a 50 cal BP,243,and a 12 gage. The 243 would never shot under a foot at 100 yards and the shot gun would tare your arm off with light loads. Now remember he shoots a 375 h&h,a 870 supper mag and a 338 and never complains about recoil. The rossi is the only gun he has ever sold !!!!

IBD;

I can't comment on the Rossi set up, but can state my experience with the .410/20 question.

When I was 9, my dad gave me my first gun, a 20 gauge single-shot.  I was not a large boy but I did just fine with it and didn't find the recoil to be intimidating at all.  I did try shooting other boy's .410's & found that basically I couldn't hit squat with one.

IMHO the positive reinforcement of being effective outweighs the recoil difference.  The .410 is an expert's gun, the 20 with light loads is the way to go for a first shotgun.

I got my girls a H&R 410 for their first shotgun, other than shooting grouse out of trees, they could never hit anything with it.  I got some light 12 gauge loads for my 870, they did pretty well with it.

What I wished, I had done, was get a 28 gauge double for them instead, they could have hit something with it and they would've had a life long shotgun to use.  I think Mossberg int, makes a 28ga O/U, that has 20 ga barrel, that can be bought as a combo or maybe ordered later.  It's on a 20ga, not a true 28ga frame, but I don't think the few ounces difference, would be too bad of a thing.  You could also just get a 20 to start with and shoot light loads.

All good thoughts..........I agree about the .410 being an experts gun for hunting or clays.....we tried the 20ga with a Steven's ss youth model and it kicked way to much for his comfort even with trap loads.  Light gun/plastic butt plate with slip on rubber recoil pad.  His mom has an 870 20ga on the 12ga frame and it is a bit heavy yet for him.  I have a 28ga O/U we will try but it is a bit much gun ($) for a 11yr old...yet....he might have to wait 'til gramps checks out to get it. Might try a dbl bbl 20ga IF he can hold up 2 bbls...that should dampen recoil a bit...don't have a 20ga semi-auto to try...he would have to use it as a single shot yet anyway for a bit.  The point is we only wing shoot our game birds be they grouse or pheasant or ducks or geese, timberdoodle's etc.  so, the gun has to be one he can swing and shoot with....my son didn't get "big/tall" until he turned 14 so maybe there is hope yet for Matt.  thanks for the input.....

I do not buy into the experts spiel with the 410 sure they are harder to hit with but then learn to do it. I watched a friends kid shoot trap from a hand held thrower and the little shit did fine. I had a friend in high school that was a year or two younger than I and he had two shotguns a 41`0 double and a 16 double both the same make. He could shoot trap with that 410 as well as the 16 better than the adults we had at an informal trap shoot. His secret he grew up in Canada shooting grouse and he got good at it with both guns.

For years I always heard a 410 shoots as far as a 12 which is BS oh the bbs may travel that far but the pattern does not go out as far and I would say learning to keep your shots with in 25 yards is about it. Some say 30 yards but I think that is stretching it.  I now shoot my grouse with a 410 using a Encore 45/410 pistol barrel.  I keep my shots around 20 yards and it works just fine. Kinda fun reminds me of the old 410 pistols of the old days until they got outlawed. Always felt that was a stupid law as a 410 pistol is a handy thing to have and not a gangsters gun.
In times of tyranny and injustice when law oppresses the people, the outlaw takes his place in history

IBD, I tryied a single shot shotgun for my son when he was 9 yrds old.  Found the point of aim would change from one barrel to the next due to the taper of the barrel!  The smaller gauge barrel would shoot higher than the larger gauge.

IBD, Ever consider that it might be the ammo and not the gun?  I know that Win makes an AA featherlight 12 with a 50% reduction in noise and recoil. A bit slow at under 1000 fps. I'd almost bet that the 12 ga Featherlights will kick less than standard 20 ga. loads.

I'm certain that there are some twenty guage reduced loads on the net somewhere that could be loaded up for him that would function similarly in the 20. If I had a better 20 gauge loader I'd loan it to you but mine's an old Dietemeyer. Works but can be frustrating. I'll poke around and see if I can find some loads. RD

thanks for the input....for a temporary solution this fall I think we will use  my "four tenner" in a single shot 20 for practice at stationary targets to build confidence & familiarity with the gun.  I have 2 SS's to choose from but only one will maybe work...the youth model cuz it has shorter stock and grandson is small of stature.  I did find a 28ga SS shot by H&R maybe I might look into...but ammo is spendy for those for a kid as is the .410 ammo too I guess.

Rd, thanks for thought of  loader offer but I do have a 20ga loader, MEC single stage...700 Versa MEC maybe and even a LEE 20ga load-all...lots of M-T shells.....so I can work up some light loads IF I can find a good recipe.....don't know what powders they use in the "featherlite" loads by factories.  Better start checking I guess.

RayS.....never gave a thought to how maybe the bbl OD could affect the aim point of a shotgun......410 vs 20ga for example....I think I have given up on the 4 bbl set up from Rossi.  IF he eats 'nuff wheaties and spinach he may be able to handle one of my dbl bbl 20's in a yr or two...or his mom's 870 20ga or her 20 ga dbl.

I've found an old basket ball rolled along the ground to be a helpful
training devise. It gives feedback when hit and misses are seen with
dirt splash. Kids I've seen and even myself as a youngster have/had
the misconception that a shotgun pattern is huge and that aiming isn't
that important. When you can actually see the splash and learn from it
the transition to flying targets is much easier. Just starting with a .410
with no reference like that on flying targets can be very frustrating.

If I were going to buy a kid a first and only shotgun to get him from 10
to 17 years old it would be a .20ga. I started league trap in 5th grade
and I was the only one with a .20, everyone else the same age shot
12's and I did too the next year. They just have to get used to it and
get over the perceived fear of recoil.

If you google ultra light 12 ga load data or 20 ga for that matter you
will find a bunch of loads. You won't be able to use your progressive
loader though.
Endeavor to persevere.

dd...I agree with the 20 ga concept for young shotgunners.  the BB idea is pretty good one....I have a single stage MEC 20 ga loader also....even a LEE Load-All 20 ga.  I have found some light load data for the 20 ga too I can try.

I am going to use a Savage 4-tenner insert in the single shot 20 ga to begin with since he didn't take well to the one 20 ga round he fired last spring.  He has shot a .410 & is ok with that.

I bought my son that Stevens youth M94 20 ga when he was 13 (cuz he was so small then) & by 14 he outgrew it so then got him a Citori 20 ga IC/M and he still uses that gun 24 yrs later.

Having worked with kids wanting to shoot Trap we have found that very light loads in a 12 that fits is much better than the most 20 gauge loads, both can shoot 7/8 ounce loads, the 12 can be loaded to less feet per second and seems to throw a better pattern than the 20 does with less FELT recoil, my suggestion would be to buy a cheap 870 and fit the stock to his LOP and make sure it was not barrel heavy and then work up some reloads that he is comfortable with, you can always pass it on to some one wanting a youth gun when he out grows it. Confidence in hitting the target is very important with young shooters. my 2 cents.

good advice hivolt, but I don't think he can hold up an 870 yet.....even if stock is shortened and it would need to be....I don't think he could work the pump action either at this point...short in the arm and small in the hand....maybe in another yr or two.  We are not trying to make him a trap shooter at this point....appreciate the input tho.

Check out a couple of these shotgun loads, they should be low recoil, 3/4oz with 6K to 8K pressure.

I've used a few of the youth loads before, you can get pretty good accuracy out of them.  I hadn't noticed the shotgun loads before, when I did, I thought of your grandson and thought they may be the ticket.

I've loaded the /06 down to 30-30 levels fairly easily.  I've loaded it to 300 savage levels for hunting.  I'm sure you could load 7/08 to 243 recoil levels and still have a more effective deer load.

I would expect the 3/4oz 1150fps 20ga load would be close to 28ga load, I would think the 3/4oz 1200fps 12ga load would have even less recoil.

A .410 may be a good kids gun but I don't recommend it. Nothing, and I mean NOTHING is more frustrating than to be shooting at something and missing it consistantly, especially for a beginner. Some kids learn quick and that's fine, but nothing discourages a young hunter prospect than missing consistantly. I always recommend a 20 Ga for newbies because it is a lot more forgiving at range than a .410. While it may not be an experts caliber (not gage) I refer to it as such for the simple reason that whe one gets one, he usually has the sight picture down pat, knows to hold it tighter, and usually does well at given ranges. As for myself, I wouldn't recommend a kid starting with a .410...................................Kingpin

Agreed KP....but I am going to let him shoot it at stationary targets to build his confidence with just shooting a shotgun....last yr we tried a 20ga and I goofed and used a SS Stevens youth model....shorter stock length to fit him better.....kicks pretty hard for a little feller...no wt to help tame recoil....he didn't like it and now I need to overcome that bad experiance....hence I will use a .410 insert in that gun to work in that direction.  We won't let him Hunt with that caliber of shotgun.
