    Posted: 17 December 2008 at 17:15

Evening, Gentlemen.  Suprise of all suprises after what I was told from my GI dealer, Santa showed up today in a little white USPS truck with a package for me.  Didn't think this thing had a chance of getting here before Christmas.  I am happy to be wrong.

Snatched the slide of my g21 and slide on the beefy .50 GI replacement.  Here's the way she looks :

I like it alot.  Hoping to wrap up work early tomorrow and run up to the brothers and see how this thing feels with the two factory loads I got with the package.  'Sposed to be getting another round of extreme cold Friday on so if I don't get some shooting in tomorrow, I may be on hold till late next week and that'd be unacceptable.  lol.  The 2 extra magazines ordered are still on the way but I have the one that came with the kit and that's plenty to start with now.

The business end of the g21 .50GI and g37 .45GAP :

Here's the GI with some of my other cc rounds :

l to r : 40s&w - 10mm - .45gap - .45acp - .50gi

And here's the 1/2cal trifecta :

l to r : .50gi - .50ae - .500s&wmag

I'm sure I won't get any load development worked on till spring for this bugger but if we can get at least +10* out of tomorrow, i'm gonna get some bullets down the barrel of this thing, no matter how cold the hands get.

Here's a last pic for ya.  No idea how it got in with this bundle with everything was being downloaded but got a little smile out of it when I saw it.  Hope you do to.  My 13 month old and grandpa this last Halloween.  He sure was proud of his bumblebee outfit :

Take care.

gun looks sharp, and thanks for the cartridge comparisons.

the boy looks great!

would like to hear your thoughts on the gi's performance when you get some data.

is there a particular reason the magazine is as long as it is? ie is that an extension/bumper added by you, or...? mag capacity?

Hey DAKOTA.  Will post something on feel and extreme cold functionality later tonight.  I have -5* at the house now and snowing.  Supposed to warm up to 11* today.  We'll see.  Doubt I'll have much to report on accuracy as it'll be my shivering that opens up the groups more then what they probably should be.

Yeah, the pic shows what GI calls their "extended" magazine.  That being 9+1.  I did get 10 rounds in the magazine yesterday and will see if all works well starting with that many in the hopper.  No idea why it shouldn't but we'll see.  Their standard is an 8+1 and looks like the standard magazine that comes with these 20 / 21 semiauto's.

Talk to ya later.  Stay warm.

got off work this afternoon around 3. it was already -4*. not good. needless to say, it didn't reach 10*, as i'd hoped. by the time i got up to my bro's, it was -14* and not so much snowing as crystals falling out of the sky. pretty, i suppose, if i'd have been better dressed for it and i wasn't wanting to do some shooting.

cold be damned. ran 6 factory 300 gr. and 10 275 gr. rounds in 3 or 4 shot groups.  went back into the shop to warm up after every other group. the 300's performed flawlessly and were extremely comfortable to shoot. load data sent with the kit says apx. 720 fps for this load. the 275's were a bit more lively. still a pleasure, though. data read apx. 890 fps for them. all minute-of-milk-jug at 20 paces or so. in the extreme cold, i was thrilled with that.  and velocities should easily be improved upon once load development takes place. there was a minor hick-up with the 275 load. on four of the 10 shots, the slide would not come back fully to the correct position after extracting a spent case and grabbing another round. a slight thumb push would do the trick. once we got back into the shop, my bro took a little closer look. it looked like where the barrel slid into its locked position, it was getting hung up as it came into contact with the slide. bro said we could polish that up real quick with a fine paper or simply let the gun polish itself during use. we'll get it taked care of one way or the other.

it's not gonna take me long to blow through this factory stuff so i gotta start the reloading process much sooner then later.  that became obvious real quick as this thing is very fun to shoot.

real happy with the maiden voyage of this .50gi, save for the sub-zero weather, that is.  lol.

Oh I like the look of that round.   Ya gotta like anything that is .50"!! LOL.  Like the looks of the .50 AE too.  Just too many toys and not enough money.  If only somebody chambered that other than Glock.  They just don't feel right in my hand.  Guess I'll just have to stay with my .50 Beowulf!

VAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA Where have you been? I haven't seen you in a year or more. In fact, I was going to visit so we could play with the ultimate .50. Keep me posted and stay in touch. Oh yeah, Merry Christmas...........................Kingpin

well gentlemen, before i've even get a round of reloaded ammo through the g21 .50gi, i'm eliminating the two bullets i chose to start development around.  Both being Speer.  One a 300 gr. Gold Dot.  The other a 325 gr. UCHP.  The mouth of the hollow point on both bullets is just to large and hampers reliable cycling from the mag to the chamber.  I guess I'll either sell or work up loads in my .50AE for them.

So,

Plan B.

After doing a little digging and putting two and two together, I've got confirmation that GunCrafters Inc is currently using Rainier bullets in all their factory stuff.  I got a batch of 100 275 gr. Rainier hp's for Christmas from my bro and will be bringing in a box of the Rainier 300 gr. HP's with my next Midway order.  These two bullets will be tested from this point forward.  Their much smaller mouth should dramatically help functionality.

Back to the reloading bench to pound out some Speer bullets and get a couple new batches worked up.

Morning DAKOTA.  The 300 gr. xtp has been considered.  Is still being considered, as a matter of fact.  If these Rainier bullets have any sort of hick-up, they're next.  I like the xtp's that I've used and wouldn't mind using them in this GI.  I like the price of the Rainier bullets.  As I was running down pricing off Midway, these just stood out.  $20.99 or $21.99/100, depending on the weight hp.  $32.99/100 for the 300xpt.  Not averse to spending $$$ on the bullets that I use, but if I don't have to, it's nice not to.  We'll test these Rainier out and if things go south, your suggestion is up to bat.

Hey K,

I have some 385gr Rems if you want to try em. Same as the third one from the left on VA Big bore's lower picture above. Nice narrow point but might be a little long for you? Could be just enough room left for a few flakes of Bullseye?

OAL .924

canelure to base .355

Outside of hollow point .210

thanks for the offer, dd.  i think i'm set right now with these rainier bullets to start testing with.  i'll feel them out for a while.  i think 385 might be a smidge heavy (long) for this gi but could prove interesting in the ae, or better yet the s&wmag.  i'll shoot ya a pm if plans change down the line and see if the offer and bullets are still available.  take care.  korey

I'm no longer in the 500 S&W business so I  have lots of bullets and brass if you ever need any.
