I've got one rated for -20 degress and am going to get a bed roll to put around it and give it even more protection.

Fella's;

This is going to be an interesting thread for me.  I should get a new bag.  My old faithful has gotten to be just sorta - old.  It'll do; if you use a coupla tricks, it can do pretty good until it gets ridiculously cold, but still.

I've got a North Face bigfoot, rated to -20. It has a lifetime gaurantee. i've had this for over 25 years, and they have replaced the zipper in it once. It's synthetic, and does a pretty good job even when wet.

I've had mine for over 20 years each. I have a set of down bags and a set of quallofil ones. I say set because they zip together. My wife goes on lots of my outdoor adventures.

I don't know what they're rated for any more. The quallofil bags are good for some pretty cold temps but I was not quite comfortable when it was in the single digits and I was in the back of my horse trailer a couple years ago. I should start looking around for replacements I suppose.

I use an old Slumberjack, the best bag I have ever had,it's been on alot of Colo. hunts and some pretty mean (cold)Cailf. hunts up in Modoc. I'm not sure what it's rated at but it's always been a warm one.

I have the largest and thickest Hollowfill II bag I could buy.  It is 34 years old.  I've used it in the Adirondacks to the Arctic Circle.  The flannel lining is worn thin and I have sewn patches on it. Never had an uncomfortable night in it.  Slept at -50 in a floorless tent, with only two caribou hides under it. (you have to remember to put your boots out of the mud so they don't freeze to the ground.

I have a smaller mummy bag for backpacking, never had a comfortable night in it.

I leave my heavy bag open if it is warmer, like summer.

The zipper is my temperature regulator or thermostat.

Just a note regarding Slumberjack Sleeping Bags. Due to varying seasons of use I have a couple different weight bags for myself and a couple of extras for "friends" that might accompany me on a trip here and there. All these sleeping bags are Slumberjacks due to being reasonably priced and of reasonable quality. After a few years of use one of these bags opened up along a seam, just a couple inches but it looked to be the start of a real problem. Recalling that when purchased Slumberjack boasted of a lifetime guarantee I got online and contacted the company to inquire about my problem.
They offered me a very simple solution, I was instructed to remove(cut)a small section of the sleeping bag which would include a section of the zipper and to mail it to them and they would replace the bag. No receipt, no questions, no bullshit. 10 days after I mailed out this small section of my failing sleeping bag a brand new bag showed up in the mail..

I've got a couple sets of military surplus sleeping bags that consist of an arctic inner, an arctic outer, a flannel liner and a canvas shell.  I have a 1958, thin, summer weight  and a new hollo-fiber medium weight for warmer weather.

Does anyone know the rating of the arctic inner and outer bags I have, considered as a set of two?

My favorite is a North Face Chrysalis -- rated to 25 degrees, it weighs 2 lbs even complete with stuff sack.  I have a 1 llb goretex bivvy sack to go with it when it gets really cold, but this is the best backpacker bag I've ever come across.

Mine is an Eastern Mountain Sports (lifetime guarentee, replace it no questions asked) Cold Snap rated for 20 above. It's very comfortable, but it isnt warm enough for 30 degrees let alone 20. My parents got it for me a few years back and I guess it was about 150 bucks, so I dont want to replace it. I am thinking of just getting a bedroll for extra warmth. What would the temp. rating be if I added a bed roll?

I use two bags one is a 30 degree and one is a 40 degree.  I have slept on a closed cell foam pad with the 40 degree one inside the 30 degree one with the temps in the single digits and was comfortable.  Just starting using the foam cell this past winter, that alone made a real noticeable difference.  There is a liner made from a material something like a thick flannel can't remember what it is called, anyway it is pretty light weight and supposed to lower your bag rating 12 degrees I think.

If you can sue McDonalds for getting you fat then why can't you sue the alcohol companies for all the ugly people you ended up sleeping with?

Mummy bags don't cut it for me too uncomfortable, and the zipper is in a bad spot for arthritis people.

If you want a quick fix to get another 20 degrees out of your bag.  Put a space blanket under and over it.  Likght weight too.  They do have a tendancy to slide off in the middle of the night, and the new cold wakes you up.  But that is about the same time as a potti callLOL

The only thing i dont like about mummy bags is that they use plastic zippers and ive had alot of bad luck with them. For one, i toss and turn alot when i sleep and in a snug mummy bag you end up unfeeding the zipper so now you have to back it up and rezip the damn thing.

Try a goretex Bivvy Sack -- you can get them from any camping supply store.  They typically add a pound or a pound and a half to the weight, but will add a good 20 degrees to your bag.
